Drdialtone Posted April 27, 2011 Report Posted April 27, 2011 Just checked it again and it's dry after only 65 miles of back road use. And yes I filled it to the "fill" marks inside the reservoir... There's no holes in the reservoir. Carb seems clean too. Underside of the filter looks clean as the day I washed it up with a combo of brake cleaner & kerosene... This is baffling me. Jumping in here about the "cleaning process"... Brake cleaner & kerosene is the recommended solution? Is there a mix rate, like 50/50 or something? Rinse with the cleaner or soak? I got the message that 50wt oil should be used so I know what to put BACK after it's cleaned! Quote

Soking overnight in Kerosene took out most of the heavy gunk, and brake cleaner disolved the stubborn stuff. Quote

55 Fargo Posted May 1, 2011 Author Report Posted May 1, 2011 Hey all, some irony in this post. My oil bath filter started to leak like crazy, all down my carb body:mad:. I have puled it, and cleaned it up, then added oil, and let her sit on the bench overnight. Leakin oil big time, I had soldered a few leaks some time back, and another leak is now appeared:confused:. I am converting this filter, I am saving the ooil bath top, and will be using the filter bottom, with another top, almost the same size, tomorrow will go pick up the paper filter to see how things are. If this does not work, then the filter mesh will get cut out. I am sitting here thinking to myslef, how ironic this is, as I had just recently posted how great thee oil bath filters are. The may be great, bu the greasy oily mess sucks:mad: Quote
Desotodav Posted May 1, 2011 Report Posted May 1, 2011 I made a slight modification to my oil bath air filter that would be hard to spot - even for the trained eye. The cost was minimal and the benefits are great. I can simply wash out my foam filter at each service interval now, then re-oil it and put it back into place. I used foam that would not restrict airflow (probably increases it if anything). I also feel that the new foam would have better filtration qualities than the old hair that previously filled the same filter. Desotodav Quote
55 Fargo Posted May 2, 2011 Author Report Posted May 2, 2011 Hi Tim - Here's an update. Drove the car for 35 miles yesterday, all backroads. Added about 10 table spoons of oil before I took her on the road. When I got back the sump dry as a bone. Before I left, I also installed an ever-dri wire & cap system that I got from Roberts motor parts. I checked the plugs and they all seem clean. Checked timing & dwell and all seemed well. Exhaust on cold start shows some black soot and condensation on the garage floor, but clears quickly. Thankfully never have had an issue with blue smoke, although the exhaust does smell much richer than your average modern car, but I chaulked this up to the the lack of smog equipment. There is no PCV system on the car as of yet, just the factory installed crankcase vent tube. Air cleaner assembly appears to be just as clean as the day I doused it with kerosene (steel wool interior appears bright and shiny). Air cleaner assembly seems to be in factory condition as well. I will get photographs and post shortly. Other than that I do get some smoke from the oil fill vent, but this seems to be normal from what I hear. thanks - Mark Here is what I just discovered on my air filter bottom, it has been leaking oil into the botom chamber and it was full of oil. So maybe yours is storing oil that leaks into this area too. Take the breather off the carb, and look underneath to see if this are is filling up. My was full of oil, and I am having a time getting it all out. I will pour some solvent in there soon, to flush out the remainder. I am done twith oil bath filters and all the friggin mess it produces.... Quote
