Well found a leek in the gas tank on another car odd place - about 3 inches up on the side of the tank- it was weeping- what to do??

I mad a paste of JB weld and smeared it on the area like plaster after I had wire brushed it . Anyone ever seen on weeping ? We will see how old JB ( not Jim Beam either) does and an anti weep compound from the outside- The tank is on a jag and a bit80s8h to get off so I am trying this- any other ideas before I seal it back up. I am painting the area with rustle also.

Ideas??

Lou,

As long as the area you put the JB Weld on is dry when you apply it, it will seal against gasoline just fine. I did the same to my tank and it's held without a problem. If it's still seeping gas, the JB Weld won't stick to the metal properly. Just drain the gas down below the seep point and you're set.

Something very strange with mine. I resoldered my fuel pickup to the tank and used some JB Weld to add some strength to it. After setting up, I painted it with XO rust. Anyway, it took forever for the paint to setup where the JB weld was. Don't know what caused it and don't know if it's common or just a freak occurrence. I believe the paint finally setup over the epoxy, not really concerned, though. The rest of the tank came out nicely with the XO rust.

I taught Ag Mechaaics at a vocational high school for some years. At the same school another teacher rebuilt hit-and-miss fractional horsepower engines from the past. I'fe seen this dude take gas tanks I could see light through and repair them with the tank sealer that's sold by Eastwood. It's amazing stuff. Made a believer out of me. He just put wide masking tape over the punky areas, added sealer, rolled the stuff around a while, then dumped the excess out and let'er dry. Worked like a charm.

Having said all that, I have since heard that there are old and new formulas of tank sealer - only the new is compatible with today's highly oxygenated fuels, so mebby' one should ask before plunkin' down the bu$$z for the sealer. JMHO:o

Used the JB Weld on my gas tank from the other car as one of the last steps cleaning it and let it dry a very long time. Painted it with the xo rust which took to it fine but havent been abe to see if it works yet. Fellow did my transmission case with a gob of it yrs back (diff. vehicle) but it didnt take because it wasnt cleaned properly. Did it correct way later and it worked fine.

I do know it doesnt hold up to high heat like a manifold. Tried that few yrs back and all it did was get brittle, crack and fall off. Other than that, good stuff!

I used JB weld on a late model gas tanks after finding a hole punched into it for quick draining....yeah ....lets not go there...anyway..I super cleaned the area with the wire brush...wiped clean with solvent...smeared a tad of JB on a larger sheet metal self threading bolt with large washer...screwed it in tight and then brushed a layer of JB over that...little undercoating after that and no one is the wiser...worked like a champ.
