55 Fargo Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 Hey has anyone used Krylon Crystal clear rattle can clear coat . It dries super fast, just am wondering what class of paint it is. I think it must be in a the 1 k acrylic enamel family of paints. I was clearing over some small bird houses the kids were painting with Crayola washable kids paint. I found if you did a few mist coats, the paint would not wrinkle or peel, then lay on a a few more heavier coats, and no problem. I guess the new waterborne base gets regular 2 k clear over it, so similar idea, the krylon clear over water based kid paint.....LOL Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 I have used this stuff a number of times...works great on flat latex paint and have used it on Olympic stains on wood to give it a nice satin finish and making the surface washable.. I have also clear coated lightly blasted aluminum rims for a beautiful durable finish..I was totally dumbfound that the rims were nice and shinny, totally washable and without peel, crack or dulling of the finish years later Quote
Niel Hoback Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 I don't know if this is any use, but I put several coats of that on a "See Rock City" bird house that I think is made of masonite and it still looks as good as new. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 Neil, do birds fly out purposely to see Rock City...and if they did, how would we know..inquiring minds gotta know...clear coat does about all you need except hide the mistakes.. Quote
55 Fargo Posted March 28, 2011 Author Report Posted March 28, 2011 Thanx Tim, and Neil, this stuff seems to work well, my ? though is it urethane 1 k or enamel based of some sort... Quote
Al B. Bach Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 I haven't used it but it sounds like it may be nice for my cigar box guitars. Do you have any pictures showing what kind of gloss you were able to achieve? I am thinking about building a guitar with a drawing of my car on it and this could be just the ticket to seal it good. Merle Coggins Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 I looked at Krylon's web site and they just call it Acrylic. Quote
55 Fargo Posted March 28, 2011 Author Report Posted March 28, 2011 I looked at Krylon's web site and they just call it Acrylic. Thanx Merle, not sure what is their meaning of "acrylic", it's solvent base is fairly aggressive with acetone, toluene in the mix... Quote
Niel Hoback Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 Here's the shine on the bird house. Easier for them to see the ad. Quote
55 Fargo Posted April 17, 2011 Author Report Posted April 17, 2011 Okay had a tire repaired the other day, when I got it back cleaned the rim front and back, scuffed a bit and shot 1 k Tremclad white high gloss enamel paint on the rim, 3 coats back to back with 15 minute flash time, followed by 3 coats of Krylon Rattle can clear coat, turned out very well. I did unfortunately get some fish eyes, on the rim exterior, forgot in my haste to wipe down with solvent before shooting paint. The paint under was a flat black and in decent shape. Got a little on the tire, as my tape and mask lifted a bit, but no big deal this tire has to be replaced soon. I have the tire in a hot sun room in the house curing for about a week before using it again... Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted April 17, 2011 Report Posted April 17, 2011 Looks good for the most part. Tom Quote
55 Fargo Posted April 17, 2011 Author Report Posted April 17, 2011 Looks good for the most part.Tom It's just to clean-up the rim, except for the fisheyes, it came off very well, gonna redo all 4 at some future point. I am hoping to install newer tires on all 4 rims very soon.... Quote
adam_knox Posted April 18, 2011 Report Posted April 18, 2011 I don't know about class or anything, but I have used it in the past on pinball backglasses. Its really clear and holds up to changes in temperature very well. Quote
