Labrauer Posted March 1, 2011 Report Posted March 1, 2011 (edited) I have a P15 1948 Plymouth Special Deluxe Coupe that has what I was told had a 230cI engine in it. I checked the numbers on the engine and came up with P15*I020862 is this a true 230 engine or something else? I also am missing the rubber O ring that goes on the carb. for the breather to sit on so you can screw it tight on the carb. The carb is a carter ball & ball 0370 at least that is what is on it. The carb has a manual choke I can't seem to get to work right. Pull the choke button out and it will choke push it in and it will stay half choked. If you give it gas the choke on top of carb goes back on choke which makes the engine run pretty rich I would imagine. Anyone know where I can get this part and give any information on the engine will be gratefull. Thanks as always for the information, Larry Brauer:confused: Edited March 1, 2011 by Labrauer Quote
hkestes41 Posted March 1, 2011 Report Posted March 1, 2011 Larry, If the engine number is as you show it is a 218 not a 230 unless someone has installed a 230 crank and rods at some point. Quote
Jim Yergin Posted March 1, 2011 Report Posted March 1, 2011 Sorry I can't help you on the carb question but I would say that you do not have a 230. I believe the P15 in the engine ID# indicates it is the 218 that was standard in the P15's. Jim Yergin Quote
greg g Posted March 1, 2011 Report Posted March 1, 2011 Unless you know the complete history of the engine, the only way to verify if its displacement has been changed to 230 would be to measure the stroke. You can do this via the pipe plug above #6 cylinder. Do the rubber seal still exist. Haven't seen one in years. the choke cable should hold the butterfly in any position it is set in until moved physically throught he cable. Can you post some pics of what you have and how it is hooked up? Quote
Jim Saraceno Posted March 1, 2011 Report Posted March 1, 2011 Can you not make an adjustment on the choke cable where the choke is fully open when the button is pushed in? Loosen the clamp that holds the housing and push it forward until the choke is open then re tighten it. Quote
Labrauer Posted March 2, 2011 Author Report Posted March 2, 2011 Thanks guys I did what you all said and I got it to work this time. I also adjusted the idle speed and the other adjustment and it runs fine now. I still need the rubber that goes on top of the carb so if anyone knows where I can get one please let me know. Thanks guys for all the good information, Larry Brauer:D Quote

I made mine out of some neoprene gasket material, or old inner tube, works just fine, you may have to improvise and get creative..... Quote
Labrauer Posted March 2, 2011 Author Report Posted March 2, 2011 I may have to do just that. Get some rubber and make one that will fit the carb. top. I have never tried anything like this but I can try anything once. Don't know how thick it is suppost to be or what angle the rubber needs to be to fit the breather so all I can do is try and do it by trial and error. Thanks for the responce from all, Larry Brauer Quote
Greenbomb Posted March 2, 2011 Report Posted March 2, 2011 Ha! That's pretty much how I get through the day! Don't worry, you'll be able to whip that out no problem. Show us a pic of what you come up with. Quote

I cut many of my own gaskets with the material. Quote
