47 P15 - Oil questions...

Recommended Posts

Fellow Moparians, I seek your guidance! I bought a 47 Special Deluxe Club Coupe, with a flathead six from a 1950. Two questions. What is the recommended engine oil? And, I have some sort of oil leak that "appears" to be emanating on the oil filter side of the engine. No oil on the right side, only the left. Not a major leak, but just enough to be messy. Any ideas on what to check? Perhaps a fitting that typically leaks under pressure? Thanks!

Clean that side of the engine up good, let her run and watch for leaks, the leaks could be coming from both fittings for the oil filter canister, the oil pressure gauge.

I use 30 weight non detergent oil in my car, but many people use the modern oils of different weights. Check the older threads about oil as that may be able to answer your questions

Hope this helps,

Bob

There have recently been two or three indepth discussions on oil so a forum search should provid you with a lot of info.

Check your fitings on the oilfilter lines and also more importantly the line that goes to the oil pressure gauge. If that rubber flex line goes you can loose your oil in no time flat.

Other sources are blowby mist coming out the oill filler breather, ad perhaps the distributor to the block interface. But since that area is not under pressure it prety unlikely.

Maybe we need a section or sub-section, dedicated to Oil, Lubricants, etc, for both the car and truck boards, all archived info could be entered there.

I know the topic of oil gets recalled every once ina while, and I do not see this changing in the future.

So Maybe GTK could create a sub-section for oil and lubricant topics, types, and discussion... hey maybe we can get a sponsor from a big oil company....

First 3 responses from NY, then Canada. Guess who's not out drivin':D their cars today

If it weren't that cold I could go for a nice drive down my road, as it is super dry, even though there tons of snow everywhere in the fields.

Tomorrow, supposed to be about 20f, so maybe a ride.....ps where the responses from Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin....

my club is doing a cruise with 2 other clubs today, but i am doing wood floors in the house. sometimes the wifes wishes come first. i was out last weekend to a benefit for the special olympics.i am in north carolina and the weather is 50's to 70's depending on the day. today,58, tomorrow should be 74. all kinds of car stuff coming up in march and the weather should cooperate. our club has a show on april 1 in fort fisher on kure beach if anyone is interested. i am doing a part that is for survivor cars, first year we have that category. i am looking forward to seeing some nice original cars. my 54 windsor convertible is original but is not good enough to qualify as a survivor, but i will be showing it anyway. enjoy the drive wherever you go. capt den

Just think how wet it would be over there if we did not take a big share of the rain....that is why I am putting in electric wipers....;)

I hear yah Brother, it was mighty wet in the Winnipeg area last summer and fall.

We are bracing for a possible hugfe flood in the North Dakot and Manitoba Red River Regions come spring melt....Fred

Check and see if you have the oil seal for the distributor against the block. My engine did not have it and it would leak some oil in that area on the left side.

thought th thread was about oil, got the here about weather all over, here it has been in the 80's cold front comming and going to drop to the mid 70's. As to oil, I use Amsoil 10w40 synthetic, very good oil.

Thanks for the suggestion about the oil seal on the distributor! I'm also degunking to check for leaks - sounds like the distributor or the oil pressure sending unit could be the culprits. Also thanks for the oil suggestions! BTW, I did have "Phyllis" out on the road yesterday. After five days of rain, it was bright clear and a lovely 72 degrees. The brilliant chrome and polished stainless steel always turns heads!!
