1955 plymouth Posted February 21, 2011 Report Posted February 21, 2011 I was given this by my Dad, he had it on his '52 Chevy as an accessory, it was disconnected. What were these used for? Marvel Mystery oil, oil injection? Any input, anyone use one of these? Thanks & Enjoy. Quote
greg g Posted February 21, 2011 Report Posted February 21, 2011 40's style snake oil. the lubricant was drawn from the reservoir into the intake manifold under vacuum, to provide lubrication for the combustion chamber and valves. So burning crancase oil is bad, but burning extra oil from anouther source is good. Here some of the marketing gobbly gook. Neat period accessory but probably useless, ad when the res ran dry a certain vacuum leak. http://www.ampcolubes.com/index.php?content=about Quote
1955 plymouth Posted February 21, 2011 Author Report Posted February 21, 2011 wow, looks like they still make a modern version of that gizmo. I would think it would add to the carbon buildup ontop of the piston, actually cause smoke & all kinds of nasty stuff? Good conversation peice I guess. Quote
greg g Posted February 21, 2011 Report Posted February 21, 2011 not to mention play havoc with your ecu sensors and catylitic perverter. Quote
41/53dodges Posted February 21, 2011 Report Posted February 21, 2011 i would think 2-stroke oil would do better, and may actually do something, as it does smell nice when burned... catalytic perverter. nice. Quote
james curl Posted February 21, 2011 Report Posted February 21, 2011 They used one somewhat like it on the 63 Oldsmobile Cutlass with Turbocharger. Used water and alcohol to stop detonation during high boost Quote
oldodge41 Posted February 21, 2011 Report Posted February 21, 2011 They used one somewhat like it on the 63 Oldsmobile Cutlass with Turbocharger. Used water and alcohol to stop detonation during high boost I was wondering if it could use water as I have heard of water injection to help with detonation on high compression engines. As a youngster we used to trickle water or ATF down the carb of a running engine to "bust up the carbon" , plus the ATF made 'em smoke like a bug sprayer, LOL............Tim Quote
