Dave72dt
The neutral gate on the column isn't lining up. Linkage adjustment or wear.
wayfarerstranger
if it is wear what needs to be replaced
Plymouthy Adams
duh, the worn stuff... first thing you may wish to do is quite simple adjustment...first/reverse lever is basically stationary (lowest lever on the column) and secured to the end of the column with 3 bolts..ensure these are tightened to 30 in pound..place the lever in neutral position..inspect the spacer between the first/rev and 2nd /3rd levers..the spacer should allow clearance between the shift levers..the upper screw is the shift lever end play adjustment..ensure there is no binding but also not a lot of slop..should move without drag..adjust by rotating the the bush in its angled slot to set play..lock this also to 30 inch pound...there is an alignment hole in each shift lever..You should be able to pin these together in the neutral position with the proper size drill bit...next go under the truck and inspect the linkage for play and also ensure the levers on the tranny are in neutral position..you may want to drop the linkage out of the shift levers on the tranny to make this check..next you just adjust the linkage/rods to where they will will insert smoothly into its appropriate lever...tighten it all up, AND DO remove the drill bit from the column levers, drive it home. Once home send money for this procedure to Tim Adams, PO box..... Edited February 3, 2011 by Tim Adams
Dave72dt
Yeah, what Tim said. I could do it if in front of me but I haven't touched a 3 on the tree for over 35 years. Tough to remember that far back.
MBF
Another thing to check is for wear when the roll pin goes through the collar on the steering column (the shift lever pivots on this rollpin). I had to knock out the roll pin and then drill the collar and shift arm to accept a larger pin. Wow, another PH guy w a 78 D100. What are the chances? Robert Thornton
Tim I tried every thing you said. but my b3b1952 the shifter parts are held on the column by a bracket that is welded on. it does not show this bracket in the book it just shows a Collier nothing is bolted but the end of the shaft sorry about being so dumb thanks for you're help. Plymouthy Adams
Robert...the posted answer is in direct relation to the year model of Chance's Dodge..the application is that of a 1978 Dodge truck and thus will not apply to the earlier models..sorry if this confused you... Maybe this thread will help you out. It's got pics and descriptions on adjusting the column linkage. http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/showthread.php?t=22957&highlight=shifter+column
