INJUNTOM Posted January 1, 2011 Report Posted January 1, 2011 Is this originally a 3rd brake light? If so was it the first of it's kind? If not has anyone else wired it this way? Quote

55 Fargo Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 Hey Injun, check this out, I explain how to create 3 brake lights working with the signal and tail lights. http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/showthread.php?t=25021&highlight=brake+lights Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 All 3 of my rear lights now come on when the brake is applied. The fender lights are the turn signals as well. If I can do it, anyone can. I just forget now which way I did it. Quote

Bob, did you do it with a a 7 wire aftermarket turn signal switch, which has a built in relay to allow for the brake light circuit to work in unison with the signal lights. If not, then you require relays to allow everything to function correctly.. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted January 3, 2011 Report Posted January 3, 2011 (edited) Fred, it's a 7 wire aftermarket system..... Diagram........... There were a couple mistakes in the diagram.....the words penciled in are "rear" and "front" Closer view of wording....... Edited January 3, 2011 by BobT-47P15 Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted January 3, 2011 Report Posted January 3, 2011 I think those "Foxton" instructions came with one of the $20 cheapie turn signal units. I have since used another better quality unit with rubber self cancel wheel - the Chicago Lamp 9000 unit. Another forum member gave me the correct wiring for it.....as follows....." left front is the red wire, right front green, left rear is brown, right rear light blue, orange is pilot light inside, yellow goes to brake switch". The problem is - every one of the signal makers used different colors of wires to the various places. So, if you're smart enough to determine where the wires go despite the color coding, then you have it made. Quote

Hi Bob, yes the aftermarket 7 wire units, will have the built in relay circuit to allow the brake lights and signal lights to work in conjunction with each other. My factory signal switch is 3 wire, does not have the same capabilites, so relays wired into the circuit, create the same functions as a 7 wire unit. I am alost convinced to install the 7 wire aftermarket unit, and use it that way, might not look original, but would work well. I am finding it not so easy to locate the 2- 6 volt DC DPDT relays I need, from local electronic sources......Fred Quote
Young Ed Posted January 3, 2011 Report Posted January 3, 2011 Fred I ordered some relays to do that on my p15. The wiring issues gave me nightmares so I gave up and installed a brand new signal stat 7wire. Now if I could just find a 6v flasher thats worth a damn I'd be good. Both my car and truck have burnt through one. Truck in less then 500 miles car took about 2000 miles but most of that was highway where I didn't signal much. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted January 3, 2011 Report Posted January 3, 2011 (edited) This is the Chicago Lamp 9000 with rubber cancel wheel that I now have on the car. The thing cancels itself most of the time, but sometimes doesn't, so I have to turn it off. Better than the one I had before--the $20 cheap item with the green plastic end on the handle. On these Chicago Lamp items, the rubber wheel has to be at an angle to properly contact back of the steering wheel on a Plymouth. They also make one with the wheel straight out.....they won't work. Far as I know, they don't make the Chicago Lamp kind any more, but they appear on ebay sometimes. Have bought two that are 7 wire, but got one that was a 5 wire (i think that was it). The case on most of them is a hammertone grey - this one was chrome for some reason. A lot of the old signals come up on ebay under "vintage turn signals." Edited January 3, 2011 by BobT-47P15 Quote
