41/53dodges
how would i remove the cam with most of the tappets stuck in place where they are? i tried to turn them with a wrench, but no luck. the cam does move, but it is stuck on the tappets that stick up. this motor was full of water for about 5-10 years, so... greg g
what are you trying to save??? Some folks have suggested that a bled of 50% ATF ad 50% diesel fuel make a good loosening fluid.
41/53dodges
the cam is most important (but questionable), and the tappets are sacrifice-able. i tried the acetone-ATF, it wasnt worth the time to make it, it just evaporated too quickly to work. james49ply
Just a thought, pop the spring retainers off the valves, then tap the tappits up, that should get them out of the way. I take it that you are saving the cam only?
41/53dodges
most of the retainers are off already, but i cannot figure out how to hit on the tappets with the cam in the way!
greg g
Can you get any rotation from the cam? If so you rotate it a bit, maybe creating som space where the lobes ar up, and then with a drift down the valve stem hole, tap on the lifters to attempt to loosen them. Or grab the high ones with vice grips, and try to trun them or tap on the vice grips from the bottom with a hammer. Is there something special about the cam??? Seems you could get a new on from VPW for less than your time is worth scrapping withthe old rusted block.
Merle Coggins
Are the tappets stuck or just the valves? When I dissassembled my engine the valves were all stuck tight. I was able to grip the cam sprocket with a strap wrench or large Channel-Lock pliers and rotate it slightly back and forth. Eventually I could rotate it slightly farther as I began to force the valves open. As I continued to work it back and forth, with plenty of lube, I eventually had all of the valves open. Then with the block upside down I could slide the cam out. With the cam out I could then remove the tappets. Then I worked on the valves. I had to tap them closed again to remove the keepers and springs, then I could drive them out from the bottom with a long punch. 41/53dodges
every part of this engine is stuck, valves, cam(was), lifters.
Merle Coggins
Maybe you should just give up on that engine and find someone locally who has an engine that isn't locked up and is willing to sell it to you at a very reasonable price (delivery included). 41/53dodges
trust me merle, if my father would let me, it would have been here months ago. right now, we are cleaning house (and garages) im just working on this one to build up and mothball as a spare, as it is such a universal engine. Big_John
If that engine was full of water, that cam is worthless. I can't imagine anything else inside that engine is salvagable either.
