BobT-47P15 Posted March 13, 2007 Report Posted March 13, 2007 I think Tim has some valid points......hopefully informative to some newer folks who may not have quite gotten the hang to how to do that. The Private Message is a very good way to communicate. Quote
Phill Powell Posted March 13, 2007 Report Posted March 13, 2007 I advertised in the WTB for a part recently, had 1 reply by email as requested, the person offered me the part(no price) & we made small talk about our projects, when I pressed him on price for his part he disappears? I guess the point I'm trying to make is if you want to buy or sell something do your homework & know what price you want(bottom $) or are prepared(afford) to pay. I hate tyre kickers but I really hate sellers who put "for sale" & then fish for prices. PS - I do still like the small talk & I'm not a shark & I'm no expert. There are also genuine reasons for not replying - but thats another story Quote
Phill Powell Posted March 13, 2007 Report Posted March 13, 2007 Ever had someone approach you to get advice(confidence), you open up & say I can help you with that part, they raid your parts & then not bother to turn up to their home town swap meet thats 2 miles from their door. PS - I don't squeek when I walk either. The moths fly in & out of my pockets. Quote
Normspeed Posted March 13, 2007 Report Posted March 13, 2007 Tim, the PM function is handy but it does not always work. Sometimes the get through but I've sent 2 or 3 to forum members and they either did not get them or could not view them. Also, on my software, I get the forum alert that I have a new PM but if I try to open it from that window, my popup blocker doesn't allow it. I have to go to the PM window first, then open it. I am not in any manner a moderator for the board but would like to point out to people that are in search of parts to respond to the ads and exchange dialog via PM First...it is a guaranteed manner to get the message as you get an alert that new PM has arrived else you depending on someone constantly checking the ad page. Second is that if you have a posted response then out of courtesy most other people will see that and not respond..cutting your chances on finding the part you want. I know if you ask and someone has responded I will NEVER cut the other man out of a possible deal... Third..if you be a fast clicker you may have jumped past your PM alert..monitor your private message log box at top right of your forum page. Some may have PM's offering items..you should always acknowledge your PM's... Apologies to GTK if I have stepped over any boundaries here... Thanks Quote
Young Ed Posted March 13, 2007 Report Posted March 13, 2007 I have that problem at work but if I just hit no and let it open in the same window it works just fine. Can't read a PM and the forum at the same time anyways! Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted March 14, 2007 Report Posted March 14, 2007 Right.....you need to click 'no'......then go to the message. Works fine for me...have sent quite a few PMs. I think the rule (enforced as well as they can) on the HAMB is every item is required to have a price with it. No fishing allowed for offers. I would rather hear a desired price, then say yea or nay to it. It insults some people if you shoot them a low price like you would really prefer to pay. So why do they bother?? Quote
grey beard Posted March 14, 2007 Report Posted March 14, 2007 I published a magazine for the antuique tractor hobby for tweny years, and always insisted on For Sale ads carrying a price. Most people appreciated this, especially when they dealt long distance or overseas. Wanna' guess who complained most? The biggest parts sellers! They think the dicker is a constitutional right! P.S. When you throw a stone into a pack of dogs, only one dog barks - the one that was hit. Go figure . . . . . . Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted March 14, 2007 Report Posted March 14, 2007 I agree on stating a price for items for sale. As someone mentioned, if the potential buyer thinks it's too high, he can always make a lower offer. If the seller agrees, that great, if not it's no big thing. The buyers just have to be a little more forward if they think the price is too high and tell the seller. A couple of months ago I found the one hubcap I needed to complete a set. Had bought 3 of them for $5 each at the swap meet. I sent the seller on ebay a message before the auction ended. He was asking $10 for the cap, plus shipping. I told him if it didn't sell I'd give him $5 plus the shipping. No one bought it. After the auction was over he sold me that one for $5, plus threw in another for only $1 extra shipping, the extra cap was free. So....if you think the stated prices are too high, just open mouth and say so. Quote
Guest P15-D24 Posted March 14, 2007 Report Posted March 14, 2007 Like the idea of requiring a price. I will update the intro section to indicate this and notify and sellers they need to indicate a price or their ads will be deleted. Quote

I frequent several other forums and have made good friends on the others but this forum is still my home. Quote
