greg g Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 So how does the car work with the power flite. What is your impression of acceleration and cruising gearing?? what size are those rear tires the seem a bit tall, Why didn't you grab the dust cap off the 49 (which by the way is a P18 I believe) if your not driving it. Guess you got your head gasket. did youget an extra??? Did you remember to retorque the head??? What are you using for a gas tank and or filler? Good on you for getting it on the road. Quote
1947PLEVY Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 I see you have the setup for dual back up lights...Do you have them?? need them?? God Bless US All.... John Quote

Acceleration is a tad bit slow, but its not half bad. Im guessing thats all do to tire though. When the motor gets on the cam though, i was spinnin tires on wet pavement. Cruising is where that thing really shines. it can do 60 no problem. The rear tires are 8.50-16 Nationals. Their old but not cracked. Theyre a bitch to get under the fender, but they give me the ability to cruise on the highway. Im running 8.00-16s on the front now and 8.50s-16 on the back. Looks mean. The dust cap on the 49 is too short. it wouldnt clear the castle nut. I was only able to find one head gasket, and id sure like another! Guess i bought the only one left in my area of washington. Torqued it down to 35, then 70. Got the motor warmed up and drove it around the block, then re-torqued it to 75. Also sprayed it down with copper coat. The car never had a fuel tank in it so i had to improvise. Im using the tank from an 85' ford bronco. Under the back of the car it looks stock, but open the truck and it shows the rest of the tank. I made a cradle for it, then cut out the trunk floor so half is in the trunk and half is underneith. Its way too big though. 35 gallons or so. 1947 plevy - I do not have the backup lights. if you wanna send me a pm, maybe we can talk! Quote
49 Dodge Dude Posted September 10, 2010 Report Posted September 10, 2010 Very cool pics! I love the B&W effect, and the angle and settings are very well done. Nice car! Quote

Don Coatney Posted September 11, 2010 Report Posted September 11, 2010 The powerflite isnt a half bad transmission. Acceleration is a tad bit slow, but its not half bad. Is this transmission then half good with half good acceleration? Quote
greg g Posted September 11, 2010 Report Posted September 11, 2010 Well I asked the question as over the years there have been several inquiries from folks regarding the possibility of putting an auto behind the L6 in earlier Plymouths and or Dodges. To my knowledge, this might be the first istallation in a road going car. I was hoping for a bit of a better description of the driving experience for the benefit of folks who still might be interested. Tim Adams has suggested his powerflite equiped 54 is pretty satisfactory, so another driving impression would have been apreciated especially behind a modified engine. Perhaps is difficult as Dynaflash has nothing to compare it to aside from his hot rod Nash. So not half bad might actually be pretty good. Quote

One issue thats kinda a bummer with this transmission is the stall speed in the torque converter. If i could get one with about a 1200 stall id be in heaven. I use low to take off, and it pulls strong when it hits about 1500 rpm. I then let off the gas, shift into high, and it drives kinda like a dynaflow, except when the cam comes on, the back end squats and it takes off. It works exactly like i thought it would and makes driving kinda fun. Behind a stock motor it would get real boring though. Quote
