Guest dylans1952 Posted July 23, 2010 Report Posted July 23, 2010 I ordered a new timing chain and sprocket set from Roberts Motor Parts but it is extremely tight. I might be able to get it on with a lot of pulling and a hammer but this does not seem to be good for a 58 year old engine. I'm 16 and have never done this before so any sugestions would be helpful. Merle Coggins Posted July 23, 2010 Report Posted July 23, 2010 Put the sprockets and chain together and slide them on as a group. If you get the crank sprocket on and can't line up the cam properly, then I'd say it's the wrong chain. If you've got the sprockets on and are trying to slip the chain over them you'll never get it. Guest dylans1952 Posted July 24, 2010 Report Posted July 24, 2010 I compared the gears and both chains a realized that the chain Roberts sent me does not match the gears they sent me. the new gears are like the old gears but the new chain is not like the old chain. at first I thought it was just a new design but it wont fit. however the old chain fits the new gears. they say that it is the only chain that they sell. does anyone know a better place to get a timing chain for a 1952 dodge? also should the replacement chain look just like the old one? if not does anyone have pictures of a proper replacement chain? this has become quite a problem for me so any advice is appreciated. MarcDeSoto Posted July 24, 2010 Report Posted July 24, 2010 I haven't replaced a chain since the 80's, but my new chain looked exactly the same as the old one on my 48 DeSoto. I think the new chain should be the same as the old one as far as size and thickness. But I don't where to advise you to go for that. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted July 24, 2010 Report Posted July 24, 2010 Have you checked with your local auto parts stores? Napa, Auto Zone, O'Reilly, Advance, Bumper to Bumper, etc... Quote
Harvey Tank Posted July 25, 2010 Report Posted July 25, 2010 I got my chain from Terrill Machine. no problem fit just fine. their Phone no. is 254 8932610 Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted July 25, 2010 Report Posted July 25, 2010 Interesting. I got my timing chain from Roberts also. I haven't tried to put it on yet but I hope I don't have a problem. Quote
Jim Saraceno Posted July 26, 2010 Report Posted July 26, 2010 Here is a picture of my old chain and sprockets and new. (The engine is from a '57 so I'm not sure if that makes any difference). As you can see, the outside of the links fit over the sides of the teath so you have to put the chain on the sprockets before you put the sprockets on the engine. Hope this helps. Quote
Guest dylans1952 Posted July 31, 2010 Report Posted July 31, 2010 The chain that Robert's sent me was not the right chain so I sent the whole lot back to them gears and all. then I ordered a chain and gear set from Andy Bernbaum Auto Parts. it not only fit the gears it came with but it slipped right on. so if anyone else has my problem I would recomend Andy the number is 1-617-244-1118 or www.oldmoparts.com.
