Frank Ollian Posted July 2, 2010 Report Posted July 2, 2010 One tons did not use vacume advance. Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 2, 2010 Report Posted July 2, 2010 If you have a timing light see if your even anywhere near the marks when it flashes...if it seems WAY off you might be out a whole revolution. Actually if you are off by 180 degrees the marks will still show right on the pointer. Remember the crankshaft turns at exactly twice the speed of the camshaft. Quote
wallytoo Posted July 2, 2010 Report Posted July 2, 2010 My best guess on trucks is they are designed to pull heavy loads and the throrttle would be wide open more than not. So the factory elected to not use a vacuum advance on these vehicles. makes sense, don. that may be why most of the big trucks were equipped with a governor, too. Quote
john portala Posted April 20, 2020 Report Posted April 20, 2020 can anyone tell me this is a 41 dodge trying to set timing and the mark went past where I wanted it if iwent back counter clock wise would it damage timing chain ? John Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 20, 2020 Report Posted April 20, 2020 no....you will obviously find some slack due to wear...but it is a physical connection and turning backwards will do no damage if you go past your mark a bit and have to back back up, go far enough however that when you go forward..you will have taken the slack out of the chain and therefore turn the cam a tad which in turns pus your distributor on the money... john portala Posted April 22, 2020 Report Posted April 22, 2020 thanks for replying ..The car was hard starting when hot so i was playing with the carb float and also installed another auto choke and this is what i dont understand went to start it it cranked really slow like too much compression then after 3 trys it fired up running rough . listening out of tail pipe sounded like valves missing. shut off tried again same thing. later pulled all the plugs cranked it and it turned real easy. is it possible the chain slipped a tooth or if it did would it not run at all? Im am going to pull the tappet covers off and see if whats going on .the manual says to check valve timing you can go to last intake valve and just let the tappet touch the valve and see where the mark is on the damper it says it shouldbe 2 t0 14 degress btc. what do you think. Engine always ran great total rebuit 9 yrs ago with 22 thousand miles on it now. Thanks , John Quote
