H Suhling Posted February 27, 2007 Report Posted February 27, 2007 I took my truck out yesterday for a test drive the generator wasn't chargeing I think or hope it need to be polorized but its been too many years since I've done can't remember which tab on regulator to flash. Thanks Harvey ps we lost our electric last night in middle of chat session Quote
Merle Coggins Posted February 27, 2007 Report Posted February 27, 2007 We wondered what happend to you Harvey. Apparently it wasn't a major power outage since you're back on line today. How long has it been since you've had your truck running? When I got mine, it had been sitting since the mid 90's. When I was rebuilding my engine I also took the starter and generator to a local shop that specializes in those type of things. When I picked them up he told me that it was a good thing I brought them in. They were quite nasty and probably wouldn't have worked properly as they were. It cost me $170 for both of them, which I didn't think was too bad. They both work wonderfully. Just my thoughts on the subject. Merle Quote
greg g Posted February 28, 2007 Report Posted February 28, 2007 You shouldn't need to polarize if the components are not new. To test your generators output, simply ground the field terminal temporarily with a jumper wire. With the field grounded the genny should put of full charge with the engine running. If you can do this with an assistant to monitor the amp gauge this is suggested. Do not run the truck in this fashion this is only a test. If your gauge jumps to full charge the genny is good. If not the fault is likely in the votage regulator. May be as simple as stuck points inside regulator. If you get no charge with the jumper attached to ground, th likely culprit is brushes. Easy to change them NAPA has them for about 12 or 15 bucks. Quote
Guest Dave Claussen Posted February 28, 2007 Report Posted February 28, 2007 Harvey, sorry to hear about the power outage. We had several in our area over the weekend. Just before you lost power during the chat session Sunday night you had also mentioned something about a turn signal problem. Did you get that figured out? Could it be related to the genny problem? Just a thought. Sometimes those electrical problems can be a pest to track down. Quote
H Suhling Posted February 28, 2007 Author Report Posted February 28, 2007 My truck has not been run since 1992 I am hopeing that with no battery in the truck for so long it might need polorized again. Got the turn signals to work I was trying to keep the turn signal unit that came with the truck which was the unit that was a simple toggle switch and a light to remind you that they were on. I thought it looked neater then the new style self canceling style. I was trying to run to many wires through the simple switch. Had to go to the new style and everything worked fine. I got my power back Sunday night just as everybody was signing off. Thanks, will try work on generator tomorrow evening after work. Will post some pictures as soon as I can get my adopted granddaughter to take some pictures. Harvey Quote
