austinsailor Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 (edited) They have 18 in stock, bit they are trailer tires. I'm not sure if that is a problem or not. Thoughts? Edited May 5, 2010 by austinsailor Quote
mackster Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 (edited) I wouldnt be concern on what they look like (as they look fine)..I would be concern on how they ride...its cheap enough to buy and find out though! if you do not like them you can put them on sale thru craigslist or something like that. I bought some use tires and got them for 20 bucks each and drove on them for 3 years...I took a chance and it paid out big time! Edited May 6, 2010 by mackster Quote
austinsailor Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 We just ordered 4 for my Dad's 41 Chevy pickup. He'll drive it 100 miles in the next 5 years, so it'll probably be just fine. Quote
jakenoklahoma Posted May 5, 2010 Author Report Posted May 5, 2010 I had some 7.00 x 16 made like that on the front of my IHC R122, and they worked out fine. Sturdy tire Quote
greg g Posted May 5, 2010 Report Posted May 5, 2010 Trailer tires are designed specifically to operate on trailers. I would't mount them on a driving vehicle. Quote
austinsailor Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 >Trailer tires are designed specifically to operate on trailers. >I would't mount them on a driving vehicle. In this case, they'll be driven on maybe 100 miles a year, not over about 45 MPH. I'm curious what sort of problems we might expect. Quote
jakenoklahoma Posted May 6, 2010 Author Report Posted May 6, 2010 I am not sure if I understand the differences you mention. Trailers go thousands of miles, and are constantly under load. Quote
48Dodger Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 Trailer tires are designed to carry a load, they are not safe as Automotive tires. LRC means "Load Range C" which is a 6 ply rating. Automotive tires have 2 or 4 ply rating. Auto tires have to maintain traction with the road under all conditions (softer sidewall) where trailers do not. Infact if you put Auto tires on a trailer you may have to fight the trailer tires for control (sway). The ridgedness of the Trailer tires actually allows the Auto tire to overcome certain towing problems. I imagine, with care, you could get used to the ride, but really its not a good idea. 48D Quote
red48b1c Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 (edited) I think those are 8" trailer tires, not 16" tires, based on all the others they have listed. Tire H188 Bias Ply; 16 X 6.50 X 8 Lrc is the full listing. The next tire on their bias ply listing, for example, is Tire H188 Bias Ply; 205 X 65 X 10 Lrb So if the last number is the diameter, a $35, 8" tire is not a huge value, nor will it fit a truck. I could be wrong though! All the listings have the same picture. The bottom of the bias ply listings are "car sized" diameter tires, including Tire H188 Bias Ply; St225/75d X 15 Lrd for $68, which seems about right. Edited May 6, 2010 by red48b1c More info Quote
austinsailor Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 (edited) These are 8" trailer tires. Ours were shipped, but they are able to call UPS and get them re-routed back to them. Saved by a very talented lady at that company. Back to the drawing board. Edited May 6, 2010 by austinsailor Quote
48Dodger Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 True....it should read 6.50 x 16 to be a truck tire. Not the 16 first. 48D Quote
jakenoklahoma Posted May 6, 2010 Author Report Posted May 6, 2010 argh....my fault...I saw a picture of what I thought was a 6.50 x 16 tire. I know that they are cheap, as I had bought 7.00 or 7.50 x 16 trailer tires recently. Very ashamed of my mistake...... Was just trying to source something inexpensive for our trucks. I was going to order two myself.... Quote
jakenoklahoma Posted May 6, 2010 Author Report Posted May 6, 2010 The picture on that web site looked a lot like this tire from Universal Tire http://www.universaltire.com/650-16-sta-super-transport.html Quote
austinsailor Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 I actually talked to the lady in parts, we talked in detail and she said they were 16" diameter tires. Sure sounded good. We even talked about exactly the truck and wheel size they were going on, tubeless or not. I guess the old "if it's too good to be true......" applies. I have to wonder what the "16" refers to??? Quote
Reg Evans Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 I have to wonder what the "16" refers to??? Maybe the O.D. of the tire. Quote
jakenoklahoma Posted May 6, 2010 Author Report Posted May 6, 2010 I've done stupider things in my life, but it's been a while...... Quote
mfccwhite Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 (edited) I agree with Greg. I would not mount them on a passenger car. Even though they are trailer tires, I would NOT mount them on my RV either - TOO CHEAP. Safety has a price. Mike Edited May 7, 2010 by mfccwhite Quote
52diesel Posted May 8, 2010 Report Posted May 8, 2010 Lots of small trailer, garden tractor, atv, etc tires are sized by the outside diameter because most have a standard wheel size for that outside diameter. Can be confusing, someone should standardize all this stuff. Quote
