faucet47custom Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 Does anyone know of a good source for nuts and bolts to fit our cars. I would prefer buying a kit instead of ordering individual sizes. I am trying to find a good source other than digging through hardware store shelves. Quote

Plymouthy Adams Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 Most all this stuff is generic in size and readily available across the counter. You will find that the use uf UNF thread are prevalent..on dash tirm and such coarse threads are often used with small machine screws and can often be an issue finding.. Stick with grade 5 or better hardware for body and frame and grade eight for engine and suspension..you should be ok..when using stainless..keep in mind that this stuff is very susceptable to galling when torqued and often bolts are sometimes a one use only. Monel can be this way also but more resistant to corrosion, capable higher torque values and higher priced if you can find them at all. Fastenall (sp) can be a good source for this material but will be a bit expensive. Local hardware stores normally do not stock but grade 2-3 hardware..be careful, be sure you know how to read the grade off the head when shopping. Quote
faucet47custom Posted April 1, 2010 Author Report Posted April 1, 2010 Tim, have you heard of a company called "Threads For The South"? they have a location near my house and stock a ton of loose nuts and bolts, unlike what I have experienced with Fastenall, all 50-100 piece packages when you need 2 bolts and nuts. They are a good source and I have a friend from high school that works there, I guess I will have to source some stuff there. If you can find a location near you, probably Macon, they have good pricing and selection. I am just being lazy and want to order a bulk kit. Rich, I looked up the online catalog and I will be contacting them for some stuff as well. Thanks for the link. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 (edited) it is a shame you cannot do the swap meet...also here local we have a supply company for nuts and bolts..I usually stop in on my way home from work..from one or two items to hundreds..they usually have in stock, all at very reasonable cost and regard even the small sale as "worthy" great company...R&S Suppy Edited April 1, 2010 by Tim Adams Quote
Don Coatney Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 McMaster Carr is a very good source for hardware. http://www.mcmaster.com/# Go here to learn how to read the markings on bolts. http://www.engineershandbook.com/Tables/boltgrades.htm Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 I suppose it would be rather difficult for someone to provide a "kit" as each person will end up needing something different. We have a "nut and bolt" store here where I go occasionally for a needed item. They sell singles or whatever you want. Usually the cost is very reasonable. Good info on the above mentioned sources....... Quote
faucet47custom Posted April 1, 2010 Author Report Posted April 1, 2010 Tim, I wish I could make it. I haven't been to a swap meet in years, and I need a few parts that would be nice to try to find. I also remembered a place I had seen called Industrail Depot. They provide stuff for 'Overhaulin" and a few other shows I watch. I guess after I get my car torn apart some more I will see what I need the most of and go from there. Thanks again for all of the good sources guys. Quote
