grady hawkins Posted March 29, 2010 Report Posted March 29, 2010 (edited) It is almost impossible to find any air filter that fits these MOPAR except the originl oil type because of the unique way the original attached to the carb. Fram made an adapter kit (KA-3 ) that replaced the oil type original with a paper filter. I have been running it on my D-24 with good results. Edited March 29, 2010 by grady hawkins Kit KA-3 Quote

desoto1939 Posted March 29, 2010 Report Posted March 29, 2010 I have attached pictures of how I am using a modern Napa paper air filter on mu 39 Desoto. I did not have to modify the orginal Oil Bath Air filter. I just fits in the unit perfectly. Quote

adam_knox Posted March 30, 2010 Report Posted March 30, 2010 Is the benefit just being easier to replace a paper filter rather than cleaning out the oil from the bath? Or does the paper filter do a better job? My only problem with the oil filter is finding SAE 50 to put in there...locally all I can get is 40wt. Quote
desoto1939 Posted March 30, 2010 Report Posted March 30, 2010 Will This fit on the 48 Type oil filter housing too, I would try this....Fred Rockwood If you have this style air cleaner on your car it should fit: Here are the measurement: OD 7 inches from outside edge to outside edge ID 5 1/2 inches from inside edge to inside edge height 1 3/4 I have also attached more pictures. I like the air filter since you do not have to mess with oil. Also when our cars were new the roads that were being used were dirt or tar and chip style. I personally feel that the air conditions are cleaner in regards to the dirt and dust aspect and It is much easier for me to change a paper filter every couple of years. I know that there are KND filter out there for our modern cars that you put a light coating of oil on them but for the limited amount of drive we do this is more convieient for me. Young Ed Posted March 30, 2010 Report Posted March 30, 2010 Rich am I seeing that you didn't remove the mess stuff from the lid and this just fits in there with it? Quote
desoto1939 Posted March 30, 2010 Report Posted March 30, 2010 Rich am I seeing that you didn't remove the mess stuff from the lid and this just fits in there with it? Ed: This is a complete removal of the old style wire cooper mesh unit the old oil bath style and I just dropped in the new paper filter. It was a perfect fit. The only thing that i have to do is just put an extra wasker on the top of the lid when I use the wingnut to tighten down the lid because it is a just slightly smaller in height. This ensures that the unit is down firmly. As stated this is a drop in unit. I kept the old style mesh unit for when I am having the car judged. Hope this helps. Correct.......Fred Quote

Correct.......Fred Fred, You take out the oil mesh filter unit completly. On the old style oil bath filter there were two metal bands they had holes inthem in between these two metal bands were the cooper wire meshing. Just pull the entire unit out of the housing and then drop inthe entire new paper filter just like you would be doing when replacing a modern air filter on your modern car. Keep the old style wire mesh unit for when you are having the car judged or just want to show what the correct style looked like. Rich Hartung Quote
