I took my own advice today and replaced the steering box isolators in my 41 Plymouth, had it up on stands to do the rear main oil seal and while the oil was draining outa the sump I decided to replace the rubber pads.......found that only one side of this here "restored" car had the metal ferruls, luckily I had some from the old steering box I had kept as a spare for some unknown reason for nearly 40 yrs(it was the original box outa my 40 Dodge, as it has used a rack & pinion since 1973 I have no idea why I kept it.....but glad I did........lol).........anyway turned out well........now just waiting for Roberts in Ma. to send the rope seal........gunna pull the sump off during the week and give it a scrub & paint........regards, andyd

Post some pics of the before and after of the pan when done. Curious to see if you have any sludge.

Will do..........whoever "restored" this car did a very average job.......no front sway bar, no oil filter, no door weatherstriping on either door, new windscreen rubber front & back but no sealer squirted under the rubber..........lots of little things.........lol..........andyd

Hi,

Who knows the size of the bolts?  I found the bolts I dissassembled the steeringbox 4 years ago buy these are metric m10, is this correct.

Our Mopars do not use any metric bolts......the 3 steering box bolts are 3/8 UNC from memory( 9/16th AF head)........about 4" long.......not sure about the length tho', will check, if I can find the old steering box.........andyd.

Following this thread with much interest as I've search for answers before.

Great graphic posted by Marty shows part book reference numbers.

I checked my D24 parts book and see these insulators were just used on the Right Hand Drive models.

My club coupe did not have these.

Of course I bought a pair several years ago when the unit was out fir rebuild.

Could not make them work for me.

Holes in the frame are not big enough fir the rubber, just bolts.

Never had a plate or spacers or ferrules.

Now I know why.

I have both rubber insulations on my Left hand drive 39 Desoto and they also use the two metal plates.  But for some unknown reason the numbers on the 39 desoto are different than on the 40 and Up desoto.  I have been researching this sam issue with Steele rubber I think the 1940 numbers will work on my 39 Desoto.

Hi Rich,

Odd bit for sure.

Fact that I had not of these parts in mind, and the parts book being so specific is odd as other models like yours have it.

Any other D24 owners with LEFT drive have these insulators?

Rich & Clay..........I understood that these were used in both Dodge & Plymouth from 1940 to 1954 in both RHD and LHD.........Andy Bernbaums Catalog lists the 2 piece triangular shaped set for both Dodge & Plymouth 1940 to 1954 but only for 1940 DeSoto.....Bernbaums use their own part number as S-108......both my 1940 Oz Dodge( Plymouth chassis car) and 1941 Plymouth Coupe used these.........andyd

Hi Andy

Yes I bought a pair from AB but couldn't use them.  Very confusing that my car didn't have them or the spacer sized holes in frame.

Just a thought.

Could Dodge have used them on the D24 in 1948 only after the change to 15" tires?

No idea what the reason would be.

Parts book is clear though, but I believe it was published in 1946 at the start of the D24.

My experience with these isolators was in the late 70's when I was working on an Oz 1940 Dodge Coupe that I'd sold to a mate, when doing the steering I realised that it needed these isolators, I went to the state parts distributors and just for a laugh asked them if they had any...........one of the original ones still had a legible part number so they checked their listing and found they had 5 or 6 sets.....I bought 3 sets......they were as surprised as I was that these were still on the shelf.............after swapping a new set into the 1941 Plymouth Coupe I had from 2007 to 2013 there was a marked improvement in the steering feel............andyd
