Had a state inspector come to look at my car today trying to get a NC title. I purchased with a MD title from PO. Engine number is on paperwork even though it has a SN tag on the doorframe. His computer does not show my car as it exceeds the 1948 numbers. I showed him the info from the forum explaining that it is a 1949 series one and he has to talk with his superiors about it. Have to have him come back after I put all the wheels back on and get it off jack stands or I will get an Inoperable Status title and have to pay for another as soon as it is operable. "Make it look operable" he tells me. So all the old parts go back on for a day. What a pain. Glad I didn't already pull the rear drums. If you are from NC and buy an old car get a good NC title before purchase or get one in your name from the state of purchase. More to follow.

I'm considering moving to NC. My '48 D24 is titled in Mass. in my name. The number on the title is the SN from the door frame. The engine is an old rebuild and has an odd number. (it is actually a 1951 Ply. block). Do you think that this will be a problem? The car runs good and has a current Mass. safety inspection sticker.

Thanks,

Dave

Dave: I don't believe you should have any problem whatsoever as you already have a valid title in your name with the number from the car. Vehicles over 35 years old here do not require an inspection sticker here. I will ask the man when he comes returns. Alan

Thanks! I didn't think that I would have a problem, but I've found that you can't always count on the registry of motor vehicles to be entirely logical!

Hear that there is one on the drivers side behind the rear wheel o the part the arches up over the axle. If it's there it will be stamped on the outsidde of the frame rail.

In the ongoing saga of trying to get a valid NC title I am now on hold. State inspecor could not find any number for car on chassis so has submitted paperwork to his higher authority. Would like to have title be for a 49 1st series with body number being used. Have no idea what I will end up with. PS Busycoupe: He told me that you would probably have to go through this same crap even though you have a valid title in your name.

I just went out to the garage and looked.....my frame number, looking

from behind the left rear wheel, is approx 6 inches in front on the gas

filler neck, close to the top of the frame rail. It's the same as the

number on the side of the original engine. There is a round body

mount just above where my number is. On the outside of the rail.

You need to remove the wheel for easiest access and use a wire

wheel on a drill or a wire brush to clean the crud off. The numbers

are stamped into the metal.

NC titles before VIN numbers used the numbers on the block. When we changed engines at the garage I worked at, we ground of the number on the new block and restamped the original numbers.

My original D-24 has the engine number on the title while my street rod has the body number.

As has been pointed out, don't expect these inspectors to know much about how NC cars were titled inthe 40's

Amazing!

Two months since state inspector looked at my car. Just told to pick up paperwork to get a title. Will be for a 46 instead of 49 regardless of numbers as NC State data base does not show such a thing as a 49 first series P15. Don't you just love it. My engine and body numbers mean nothing nor does the info I gave them ref this car.

Once you get the title in hand, wait a while and then try applying for a corrected title for the year of the car. Maybe on the second time around you'll get different people and the process will be less painful.

Anybody have an idea where the # is on the frame rail on a P-12?

Finally recieved paperwork from NC State inspector after all these months to get my title. Regardless of what I told and showed him my First series 49 is being titled as a 46 because the State database does not show/acknowledge a 49 P15. He also used frame and matching engine number rather that the SN tag on body. At least I can get plates and insurance now.
