P-12 Tommy Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 I've got a question on the valve cover thumb screws. How tight do you tighten them? As tight as your fingers can tighten them? Thanks in advance, Tom Quote
aero3113 Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 Yes,but they may need to be tighter. Run the engine and you will see when warm they will tighten more. You can also cut a notch in a old socket to fit over the thumb screw and use it to snug it down. Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted March 6, 2010 Author Report Posted March 6, 2010 Thanks Aero. I'll do that. Tom Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 A 11/16" six point socket fits the thumb screws just right to tighten them. Bob Quote
Don Coatney Posted March 6, 2010 Report Posted March 6, 2010 The only way oil accumulates behind the valve lifter covers is if the weep holes below the tappets that lead to the oil pan are plugged. There should be no need to wrench these thumscrews unless the weep holes are plugged assuming the gaskets are not torn. Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted March 7, 2010 Author Report Posted March 7, 2010 Don, everything in there is really clean, and no blockage. So I'll just run the engine up to temps and recheck the thumb screws. Thanks, Tom Quote
greg g Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 You for sure do't want to tighten them enough to deform them. then they will leak for sure. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 You for sure do't want to tighten them enough to deform them. then they will leak for sure. Get old and you will need to use the socket to get em tight enough! Bob Quote
greg g Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 I will confess to using some slip joint pliers. Quote
