Barabbas Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 My engine came with the Offy dual carb intake and 2 single bbl Carters. Eventually I will need to rebuild the carbs. I was wondering if I wouldn't be better off using the adapters and 2bbl webber carbs from Langdon's. My engine is totally stock inside--I will add dual exhaust but leave the displacement and cam stock. Will the dual 2bbl be too much carb for my engine--when is more carb too much? Also can you tell me which Carters are on my car now--they don't look like the pictures I've seen of the standard '52 carb (BB)---are my carb BBS or what? Quote
hkestes41 Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 Barabas I'm running the Offy and Carter Webbers from Langdon's on my 0.060 over 218. Everything else internally is stock. Mine runs just fine, may be a tad on the rich side but not enough for me to have done anything about it. Quote
Barabbas Posted February 12, 2010 Author Report Posted February 12, 2010 Very niceset up on your 225.8.... Quote
claybill Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 i dont kow what year your car is but it doesnt matter actually...... i have on both of my cars the offy.2x1 setup with stock motor. I had several options early on when deciding about carbs..2 duals..2 singles...or 1 dual. i purchased the car with a set of lANGDONS 2X2 DUALS.....EXPENSIVE AND TUNING WAS TEDIOUS.... I swapped them out for 2 single barrel B&B's stock units..2 rebuild kits from napa for 15.00 ea. and it started right up first try and runs like a top. absolutely easy to set and adjust. so i did the same on my second car..same result..runs nicely. lots of parts available and info..AND it still looks HOT UNDER THE HOOD, and runs a little better too. although a bit rich ! 18-21 mpg standard goes 60-65mph. steady + I was after... a little better performance..a hot look!...easy maintenance... parts and used units availability.......and a very economical set-up. I GOT IT! i picked up a couple used carbs from ebay and 2 from a salvage for parts as i needed them.....salvage yards have tons of them on old p-15's. $650.00 vs $75.00 bill Quote
Barabbas Posted February 12, 2010 Author Report Posted February 12, 2010 Bill, I think we are after the same goal-- "a little better performance..a hot look!...easy maintenance...parts and used units availability.......and a very economical set-up". My current carbs start and run fine, but only get 15-17mpg at 55-60mph. I'm still not sure what my carbs are but they do look significantly different from yours. At this time I think I will save the money on the 2bbls and spend it on a dual exhaust instead. Quote
Young Ed Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 You have the later low profile carbs that came on 54 and up flatheads. Quote
Barabbas Posted February 12, 2010 Author Report Posted February 12, 2010 Any significant performance difference between the low profile and original carbs? Quote
Young Ed Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 Not that I know of. Only thing I've heard of is people having trouble finding accelerator pumps for the shorties. Quote
mr63inaz Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 (edited) Very cool just the hread I have been looking for. Simple set up 2 ball an ball carbs offy 2X1 manifold ?? I am I reading this right good set up for stock motor? Is the plymouth mani from langdons for 245 the same ?? Edited February 12, 2010 by mr63inaz Quote
blueskies Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 (edited) I have the Holley Webber carbs on my 230. It's bored 30 over, HEI, 3/4 cam, and tube headers. It runs just a tad on the rich side, but I haven't felt the need to mess with it . The carbs are right out of the box from Langdon. Not sure how they'd do on a stock engine.(reload if pic doesn't show...) Pete Edited February 12, 2010 by blueskies Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 they do add a bit a good share of oh and ah to the compartment..if you are stock internal and with stock exhaust..the dual singles will be more than adequate..if you put on the larger duces odds are you will lose economy due to the internal jetting...a rich engine also flushes protective oil film..dirties the oil quiker etc etc..not to mention the fact that they initial cost will be quite some money. A properly syneced set of aces will do all your engine will be able to handle given it does not breath or exhaust above stock configuation.. Quote
Barabbas Posted February 12, 2010 Author Report Posted February 12, 2010 [ Is the plymouth mani from langdons for 245 the same ?? Langdon's has an intake for the standard 217 plymouth: http://www.stoveboltengineco.com/acartpro/product.asp?productid=153 Quote
Barabbas Posted February 12, 2010 Author Report Posted February 12, 2010 A very sweet engine indeed--sounds great....At first I thought I'd copy your engine--but....lack $ to have someone rebuild it, lack the skill to do it myself. Now I'm taking the "if it ain't broke" approach, and just to optimize the engine parts I can do myself. Quote
Barabbas Posted February 12, 2010 Author Report Posted February 12, 2010 Tim, I expect this is the way I'll go--rebuild the ones I have or get a pair of the original profiles and get the oh/ah factor from nicer air cleaners Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 do get a carb sync tool and set them up..they do add some zip this way..get them out of sync..will hinder performance.. Quote
Barabbas Posted February 12, 2010 Author Report Posted February 12, 2010 A carb sync tool???? haven't a clue Quote
Barabbas Posted February 12, 2010 Author Report Posted February 12, 2010 Found some on-line---just a vacuum device to measure flow into the carb. I understand Quote

A carb sync tool???? haven't a clue Here's the one I used- Had do use my secret decoder ring and a creative adapter to fit it to my holley/webber carbs- As always, reload if the pics don't show. Plymouthy Adams Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 the Uni-sync is the model I suggest..very very easy to use..very versatile..not very costly... http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3907.m38.l1313&_nkw=uni-sync&_sacat=See-All-Categories Quote
claybill Posted February 12, 2010 Report Posted February 12, 2010 barr...standard B&B carbs on ebay are 25-45 bucks...as ED said the ones you have are later...keep or switch. i bet internals are close to the same jetting. ALL the early single carbs had about the same main jet anyway...no real need to re-jet anythnig. due to the rich nature of the 2 aces, i use a huge aircleaner to help out with adequate air..see pic.. standard fram #..i forget.. I used standard lower carb attchment for the little chromies and added the upper /perfect fit/ frams orange yes, but cool.! bill Quote

Barabbas Posted February 12, 2010 Author Report Posted February 12, 2010 LOL---is that an actual Ovaltine Adapter plate? Secret Decoder ring, made my day--Captain Midnight would be proud Quote
Barabbas Posted February 12, 2010 Author Report Posted February 12, 2010 I agree, the orange looks is unique and has more style than the chromies Quote
Barabbas Posted February 12, 2010 Author Report Posted February 12, 2010 Thanks to all for the inputs--I've got a plan 1) Buy a Carb Sync tool (or see if Ovaltine packs one in each 32oz can) Clean up what I got 2) Complete in-process mods (12volt conversion/disc brakes/interior) 3) Add dual exhaust 4) See if I've gained enough confidence to dissect my engine and perform a Dodge Crankshaft transplant--- If so, add 2bbl Carter Webbers That should keep me out of trouble for 18 months Quote
