better check with a higher up in the DMV as to how to proceed, use the angle of out of state reciprosity laws..lots of states never issed title for vehicles of that vintage..and even today will not title that vehicle..state of Georgia is one..if I sell a car out of state the owner will get a bill of sale only..lots of states give purchasing owners grief over this but as I have been told they have to honor other states laws..so far every one has gotten a title..some by just walking in and stating reciprosity laws others by a full out fight of the locals..even I had to go to the state central office once after dealing with the locals off and on many visits over a year or so..15 minutes at the state house..out with a title..

I think there are a variety of companies that can provide replacment titles for a fee. I'm not sure how it works but do a search of "auto title services" or "lost title services" or something like that and see what you come up with. I think that if you can produce a bill of sale, or some proof of ownership, they should be able to do it. At the very least, they probably have 800 numbers so that you can talk to somebody who can walk you through the process.

Good luck

you sell them the car...they apply for title..they sell the car back to you with a title from their host state...all this happens on paper..they is also a big push to put this little loophole to bed permanently..its only gonna get tighter from here...

Who did you buy the car from? Start with a bill of sale or somehting saying how you got the car. Go to the DMV ( I have the best luck going to a rural DMV office who tends to have more experience with these issues) I have heard both sides, EZ and Hard. Austinsailor recently posted his experiences. Good Luck

I live in Washington also. I think you will have to take the vehicle to a State Patrol office to have the number on the frame checked before your done.

When I moved here from California I had to have each of the vehciles checked before they would issue a Washington State Title.

By the way I'm a retired California Police officer and in California if we found someone changed the VIN, that was gorunds to impound the vehicle.

Don't forget that some states register with the engine number, and others with the body number. My 47 is registered in California with the body number.

Does the state have any provisions for titling a car if you bought a body

from one person, then a motor and whatever parts from other sources -

and built it into a running car? Or, if the car is complete with original

motor - how do they do it? They surely must have some method....

which they should be able to explain to you.

In Missouri, as I recall, you ultimately have to take the car and paper work

to the Highway Patrol and they check numbers to see if it was ever

reported stolen. Then, if all is ok, they issue you some sort of new title.

I've never had to go that route, however.
