Joe Flanagan Posted December 20, 2009 Report Posted December 20, 2009 We got 22 inches in Alexandria, VA. I just finished shoveling what I could. Got all sweaty doing it. The sun is out and things are melting a bit but it won't get above freezing today. I need to get into my garage, for obvious reasons. I'll tackle that this afternoon. That'll be an hour's worth of shoveling at least, just to get the doors open and enough space to go between garage and house. Quote
1940plymouth Posted December 20, 2009 Report Posted December 20, 2009 All we got here was a dusting, enough to get called to work this morning to scrape and sand the roads Quote
wldavis3 Posted December 20, 2009 Report Posted December 20, 2009 Bill, That is a beautiful photo. You should be sitting out on the "sun porch" enjoying it !! Shel, Better bring J. Edgar inside. He looks like he could use a cup of hot chocolate. Quote

Tim, you could consider yourself lucky. One inch of rain will usually equal 8 to 10 inches of snow. So........if you had that much rain and it could have been about 60 inches of snow if it had been cold enough. All we had was a slight dusting last night. Disclaimer: The rain/snow conversion I used comes from the weather man here, not me. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted December 20, 2009 Report Posted December 20, 2009 Trust me Norm...I am thankful..if that had converted to snow..the whole area would be totally shut down..we are equipped here in this area for snow removable, at best if it get cold enough to freeze/ice over..only the overpasses and bridges get sanded..usually right after the pile up is removed... greg g Posted December 20, 2009 Report Posted December 20, 2009 Hey All you old guys!!!!! Be carefull, that shoveling can be hazardous to you health for those not used to it. Take it slow and easy, don't want anybody ending up inthe cardiac unit cause they thought they were kids who could just blast through it. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted December 20, 2009 Report Posted December 20, 2009 For those who aren't use to getting one or two feet of snow piled up at once, you should also think about raking the snow off the roof, at least about 3 feet from the edge up, down to the gutter. Then put some ice melter in the gutter to keep it from freezing up. If it freezes and has all the snow on the roof, it will form an ice dam, then back up under you shingles and leak into your house as the snow melts. If you don't have a snow roof rake, you can carefully use a snow shovel. Just don't dig into the shingles and damage those. Quote
