mikesinky Posted November 29, 2009 Report Posted November 29, 2009 took the head off the other day and took it to the machine shop to get shaved. was fooling around under the hood this evening and had some small bolts layin on the cowl vent and accidentally knocked them off and one of them fell into the hole where the head bolt goes. will that stay in the water jacket or oil pan? if it stays in the water jacket how is the easiest way to get it out? Jerry Roberts Posted November 29, 2009 Report Posted November 29, 2009 It wont go into the oil , it can't get there . I have seen a device that looks like a pencil that has a small magnet on the end , perhaps you could fish it out with that . When you look down the hole can you see it ? Quote
lugnut123 Posted November 29, 2009 Report Posted November 29, 2009 If you can see them get a skinny magnet and go fishin. If the're in the waterjacket. They shouldn't hurt. If they make it to the oil pan don't know. Quote
oldmopar Posted November 29, 2009 Report Posted November 29, 2009 I do not have a answer for you but stuff like that amazes me. You could not get the screw from the cowl to the head bolt opening for a $100. dollar bet but you drop it by accident and it goes right in. Quote

mikesinky Posted November 29, 2009 Author Report Posted November 29, 2009 i couldnt see it from looking down in it i thought about maybe taking the freeze plug out closest to where it fell in and try to fish it out with a magnet. i have a flexible one. Quote
JoelOkie Posted November 29, 2009 Report Posted November 29, 2009 (edited) I doubt that bolt will hurt anything in the water jacket. I know there has been a lot of stuff reported that has been found in oil pans when changing gaskets, or doing overhauls, ect., not the most uncommon of which is of course bolts, or smaller objects that could be dropped down the fill tube, I suppose. I changed the oil pan gasket on a 1948 Plymouth right after buying it several years back and there was an very old looking wooden handled screw driver in the oil pan. Almost seems like it had to have been left in there some previous removal of the pan, but strange to me, none-the-less. Hope you can fish that bolt, if for no other reason than to give you peace of mind about it. Joel Edited November 29, 2009 by JoelOkie Quote
Frank Elder Posted November 29, 2009 Report Posted November 29, 2009 There is no way a head bolt hole would go all the way to the oil pan....fish it out with a magnet or use a screwdriver with a glob of grease on the end of it. Quote

mikesinky Posted November 29, 2009 Author Report Posted November 29, 2009 tried to fish it out with a smaller magnet but couldnt. but there was a freeze plug right below the bolt hole so i knocked it out and there it was took a magnet and got it out. thanks for the advice and replies. just wanted to get it out for peace of mind. Frank Elder Posted November 29, 2009 Report Posted November 29, 2009 I dont think it was a head bolt. I didn't say it was a head bolt. I said head bolt "HOLE", his question was about a small fastner that fell into the head bolt hole. I thought you had a new bigscreen for your computer Don:D! Quote
