Carter Carb and Floor Mat Questions

What is the function of the 2 holes in the bottom mounting surface of the carburetor? I blocked them by using the wrong gasket. Could blocked holes decrease mileage? Also, I bought a new front floor mat from Sol Solerno and I cannot get the mat to lay down tight where the floor hump meets the firewall. The mat does not want to kiss the floor in the complicated hump/firewall turn. Has anyone solved this problem? Thanks in advance. Bob

The mat could be a bit out of shape by it being rolled for shipping and if stored for a period of time..may hold that shape a bit..do you have the ability to run a small electric heater and warm the interior of the car and maybe allow it to lay flat..other than that I have no other ideas at the moment.

The hole:) in the bottom of the carb is a vaccuum passages to the power piston. If vaccuum is not applied to the piston, a spring will push the piston and pin up out of the hole in the metering jet allowing considerably more fuel down the throat all of the time instead of just during conditions of wide open throttle, or rapid acceleration.

Floor mats? We don't need no steenking floor mats.

Bob, one of them controls the idle circuit, and the other is for the intermediate power circuit. This is the one that takes over after the accelerator pump shot to provide enrichment for continued WOT demands.

This works through a high vacuum signal at low rpm or steady thottle holding a needle valve in a jet closed against a spring. As the spring overpowers the lowered vacuum signal, it opens the jet to provide more fuel. If the vacuum signal is blocked, the spring would hold the needle valve open all the time. This would be akin, realitively speaking, to driving around with the secondaries on a 4bbl open all the time and probably contributes to your decreased fuel economy.

The holes match up to the small slots cut into the carb to manifold gasket to provide a vacuum signal from the intake manifold. The upper gasket in the photo is the one for the B1B, and the slots are seen. Only two are in use so the gasket is position neutral for the B1B application. I believe the BBS is similar, and may even use the kittycorner slots if I remember correctly.

So I would assure those carb passages are open, and being fed through the gasket. Put the carb back on and see if there is an improvement in you MPG's.
