Joe Flanagan Posted October 25, 2009 Report Posted October 25, 2009 Finished color sanding my hood today. Here is how it turned out: There are a few very small blemishes but I'm not going to chase after them. It looks nice. It's going to get more blemishes the first week I drive it. And my experience tells me that where this stuff is concerned, every time I try to make something absolutely flawless I create a bigger flaw than the one I was trying to correct. You have to get literally right on top of it, inches away, to see the few bugs I couldn't get out and the runs that no matter how much I sand them, leave a barely visible shadow. And only when the light is hitting it a certain way. So I'm happy. Front fenders next and then I need to find a place to store them and the hood. Quote
RobertKB Posted October 25, 2009 Report Posted October 25, 2009 Very nice work and it looks great! As I have said before, love the colour! Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted October 25, 2009 Author Report Posted October 25, 2009 Thanks Robert. At one time I thought I couldn't wait to get to the color sanding. Now I can't wait to get to the next thing. It's slow going and you always risk sanding too far. Quote
greg g Posted October 25, 2009 Report Posted October 25, 2009 Plus once you get it onthe car, you have more to look at and the little ones will be less noticable, especially with the light color. Looks great from here. Quote

dezeldoc Posted October 26, 2009 Report Posted October 26, 2009 Joe, i am green with envy! wished mine was to the paint stage. Quote
Fireball Posted October 26, 2009 Report Posted October 26, 2009 Good job Joe, what grit of a paper did you sand it before buffing? 1200? Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted October 26, 2009 Author Report Posted October 26, 2009 Thanks for all the good words. Fireball, I used 1500 to start and then went to 2000. Then compound and then polish. Someone posted a thing here from the HAMB where the guy used 1000 and said it worked well. I have some pretty heavy orange peel in my clear coat and I've been using 1000 in those spots and it is making life much easier. Also, I applied three coats of clear so I have plenty of thickness to sand and not worry about going all the way through. Actually, I'm told by the pros to leave a little orange peel because if you sand too much of your clear away, you lessen its UV protection and can shorten the life of the paint job. Modern cars leave the assembly line with a little bit of orange peel. They say that only show cars that will never be stored outside or driven very much get all the orange peel sanded off their clear coat for that stunning Jackson-Barrett finish (HA!) but that doesn't work very well in the real world. That's what I'm told, anyway. Quote
Jim Yergin Posted October 26, 2009 Report Posted October 26, 2009 Joe, Looks fantastic. Congratulations. I look forward to seeing it in person one of these days. Jim Yergin Quote
blueskies Posted October 29, 2009 Report Posted October 29, 2009 Looks great Joe. So, you'll be driving your car to the "Plymouths to Portland" event this spring, right? Pete Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted October 29, 2009 Author Report Posted October 29, 2009 I might start the engine for the first time in the spring, Pete, but that could be a stretch and it definitely won't be powering the rear wheels by then. Quote
