mackster Posted October 21, 2009 Report Posted October 21, 2009 great post Frankie! thanks for sharing! the more I see how much detail and pain staking work it is, the more Im glad I dont feel like ever painting a car ... Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted October 21, 2009 Report Posted October 21, 2009 I love it. Thanks for posting that. Interesting to know he starts with 800. When I began I got too aggressive and started with 600 I wound up cutting through the clear with it in some places so I changed to starting off with 1500, which was recommended to me but I believe by people who don't get much orange peel in their clear coat. Starting with 1500, for me, was an exercise in frustration. Took forever to get anywhere. So 800 it is. That post was right up my alley. As it is configured right now. When the paint's done, my alley will look different. Quote
Frank Elder Posted October 21, 2009 Author Report Posted October 21, 2009 Joe, what did you think of that big honking run, uh flow check, by a pro? Looks like he is more real than the guys who say it never happens to them. Glad to be of help:) Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 21, 2009 Report Posted October 21, 2009 therein lies the high cost of custom paint jobs..rework...lol Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted October 21, 2009 Report Posted October 21, 2009 I think runs just happen. Pros probably get far fewer of them. I can get practically no runs now when I shoot clear but the learning curve was steep. But I still get them. What I found a little strange was how mangled that run looked after he went at it with the razor. But I guess he did a good job of it. While we're on the subject, you all know I've been having trouble trying to do small spot repairs to the color after the clear has been applied. The repair stands out like a sore thumb because I haven't mastered blending (and don't care to, if I can get away with it). I did a small repair on the front drivers side fender right underneath the radio antenna hole. I didn't get good coverage with the color. The primer was showing through a little bit in that spot. I applied the clear and THEN saw the poor coverage in the base. So I tried to fix it. Sanded the clear. Dusted on some color. Sprayed clear on top of that spot. It looked great and I shoved the car back in the garage. THen the more I thought about it the more I thought, "I'll bet that spot sticks out like a sore thumb if I get it out in the sunlight." Nagged the heck out of me all day today. So when I got home I pulled the car out and to my HUGE relief, I could barely notice it. You have to look really hard to see it and at most angles it's impossible to see. I brought my wife out there and said, "There's a problem with the paint on this fender. Can you tell me where it is?" She looked and looked and I knew I was fine. I finally had to point it out to her and she thought I was nuts for being worried about it. So some progress at least. If I don't ding up or otherwise damage my hood and front fenders, I will color sand them, polish them and they are done. Next challenge is matching the paint because I ran out of it a couple days ago. And it was mixed by eye, no record of ingredients. Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted October 22, 2009 Report Posted October 22, 2009 Joe is my friend however he's asking for trouble. I have been painting my fenders for my 1953 truck and I had to get the guy to bring out the machine. I finally got a color match and it looks pretty close. I will be tearing it down next week replacing the fenders and running boards. Hey Joe I'm going to OHIO to pick up my first street rod:D I got my wife's permission and I can't sleep. I have to be a real good Boy from now til Thanksgiving. It's Purple and I already think I'm going to paint it. I'm dreaming as the wife actually likes the color inside and out. I can't wait:eek:I hope she doesen't think she's going to be driving it:cool: O well you can't have everything.....right Quote

Rodney Bullock Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 Hi JIm, IT's 1940 chevy bus coupe. Turn key:) I can't seem to get a good nights sleep. it was a toss up between a 1933 Plmouth coupe and this 1940 chevy. The guy with the 1933 would not budge from his very high price. He was closer to me however his car needed a paiint job but the interior was very very nice . It was daimond tuck black. It's major draw back was it had the 273 and I did not want that motor. Quote
Jim Yergin Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 Good luck with it Rodney. Looking forward to seeing it. Jim Yergin Quote
