I've not yet seen a D-24 convertible 'in the flesh' (although I know there is at least one in the UK - a red right-hand-drive).

Here are some vintage pictures I've gathered from the web.

thanks, I needed that! when I was a kid, dad and brother and I went to

a guys house in Snohomish,Washington he had 2 convertibles, 1 club coupe,and

one business coupe...they were parts car for the 1 convertible...dad could have

had all of them for $5000....but at that time we didn't have the room and $5k

might as well be $5mill.....always wondered who ended up with those cars....

Benny, you sure don't see many 46-48 Dodge D24 convertibles.

Anyone know how many were made??

The only one I've ever seen around here since moving to town in 1968 was

owned by an older lady who lived just south of here. It was sitting in a

small garage and covered with dust - but was complete. She didn't want

to sell at the time. Then she moved over to Kansas, not too far away, and

eventually sold the car to an older guy I sorta know......and he sold it to

make a buck. I would have kept it and tried to make it nice again.

My point is - you don't find those much, so don't expect too many pics

on this thread.

yeh, I know it's slim pickens...a guy down in Oregon says he has one and it's

on craigslist. the ad says it's a '47 with a 360 and a ford 9 inch....and all the metal work was done ,car just had to be finished.....but the ad didnt have any

pictures . I believe it when I see it..for all i know it could be a plymouth,chrysler, desoto..or a '57 chevy for that matter...who knows you

would be amazed at what some people think they have. he also wanted $10k

for it....I'd have to sell a Studebaker, and not eat for a couple of years to get that. And there is another one in Hemmings but it has a chevy motor or ford motor in it?

this thread was just for fun and just to see what's out there, I'm not surprised

at all....because as I'm writing this i looked in my Crestline book The Dodge Story, they said only 9500 were made between 1946-48. that's almost the number of '49-'51 roadsters and Sportabouts. And as far as i know I'm the

only person on here that owns a '51???

So now I'm not surprised at all at the low picture count....I thought people

just didnt want to post any pictures lol...

... One of those cars Robin posted is just north of you in BC.I saw the car at a show in Langley about 10 years ago and spoke with the owner. As I remember he

was the original owner and had a family member restore the car for him.

wish i could have been there to see it, i like talking to original owners, the

stories they have are great . that's the one thing i enjoy about going to car

shows.

my dad's D-24 is a 2 door sdn ( with 440) and sometimes an older gent will

come talk to us about one they had new, or one they had got for cheap, It

makes me wonder someday when i'm that age..when i go to a show and somebody shows up in a '90 Lincoln town car and i'll go off telling about how a sweet ride it was in it's day and remember when they were new....

found a picture from the movie The Defiant Ones (1958) there ones in a scene.

of weeks ago before i was about to leave and down to my last ten bucks of spending money, I found a d-24 convertible ad for $4.50....it was funny i saw

the trunk poking out of the box it was in and wondered if it was a dodge and

sure enough it was!

If you see the movie "The Defiant Ones", the D24 convertible that is pictured in the other post is started by Tony Curtis cranking it with a hand crank (or so it appears). I had a '48 Dodge and don't remember a crank opening but that was a long time back. Do any of the D24 owners here have a crank opening on your car? Can they actually be started this way?

No Sir!

There's no crank opening in D24, nor any slot to turn in the end of the crankshaft/front pulley center. Actually, it is bit of a problem to even slow turn the engine for e.g. adjusting distributor, because there's nothing but the pulleys to turn from...

The movie scene is a blooper/fake.

No matter the picture is great. It reminds me another movie from my high school time: "Grease". There was similar scene when the gang was preparing "the Greased Lightning" '48 Ford convertible hot rod for the showdown drag race at the Thunder road. WhATever D24 conv. looks much better to me compared to f.o.r.d.

Thanks Robin for nice set of pictures!

Benny,

It took me a while to see the trade proposal in your signature.

Studebaker President is an aristocratic automobile.

Is your car like the one in below picture? - running straight eight?

here's mine

Wow, it looks great! Nice color too, becomes the big Stude way better than fire engine red on the picture I found at web.

I know a gentleman here in Finland, who owns a 1927 President. If I recall it correct, the car was actually used by the President of the Republic in early 30's. A majestetic car, but I like the 1936 style better. The front end of '36 President is huge and relatively low windshield underlines the long bonnet. D24 convertible is a beautiful car, but I would not trade the big Studebaker to one of those...

Your car looks good in the photo - Is it a daily driver?

no it hasn't seen the road in years...it's complete and it looks good in pictures..but in person there is a lot of bondo work that was done to it..

..so if i keep it I'll have a lot of work ahead of me.

plus finding somebody in the state of Washington with a '47 dodge convert.

in the same condition who wants a '36 Studebaker...is gonna be a little hard to

find..kind of like finding '36 Studebaker straight eight parts....

Why not drive it as it is?

I suppose 1936 President must be a rare car even there in the States?

Lots of people sure enjoy to see it on the move.

Not to mention you will grow together to it driving to places and collecting good moments...

I drove my D24 three summer even every fender was different color and paint peeled off the roof. Last summer I put it in the garage, stripped chrome and started sanding & priming. This winter I have not had time for a single days work at the garage (which unfortunately is 180miles from my current home town...) I am sorry I started the paint job this seriously. I may just do the fenders, doors and trunk lid the summer coming and leave the roof for later on. I have to get on the road to keep myself motivated.
