lowering blocks

i've been searching for a source of lowering blocks for a while now, and haven't found anything yet. not even with the search engine on this forum...:(

2 questions:

now i know some of you are riding low, so:

1) where can i buy these things?

i heard the normal ones are too wide for our rear springs.

2)i would like to try different heights, can i start with 4" blocks and just cut them smaller when it's too low?

Our leaf springs are narrower than the Fords and Chevys, so the blocks need to be narrower. I found mine at a swap meet. Some of the forum guys have made their own using rectangular steel tubing.

Mine gave me a bit too much drop, and one of the forum members who had access to a CNC machine cut them down for me. Probably saved me from ruining them with a hacksaw:D

Fred, here's another thought. I picked these blocks up at a swap recently from a guy selling a lot of British parts. He said they were for a British car, possible an MG or a Sunbeam. They are 1-11/16" at the widest point and 1-1/2" high. A little narrower than the 2" leafs but might work. You might check on some suppliers of British aftermarket parts in your area to see if they are available.

Don't use the Autozone U-bolts. They are cheap Chinese and bend and crack. The lockwashers exploded after 50 lbs torque. I bought some 4x4 ubolts and upgraded from 1/2" to 5/8". I got mine from

I had problems finding 1/2" X 3" I.D. Ubolts, 7 3/4" long. These are 5/8" X 3" I.D. X 11" I cut down. $40 shipped. I was quoted $70 to have a custom pair made at a spring shop.

That's an Autozone 3" lowering block that will probably crack and I'll learn another lesson.

i guess i try the night prowler, i'd like to have everything

from one hand in the correct sizes, and i agree on not buying any

china stuff that makes you loose you rear end at the next speed bump...

though i'll have to slow down there anyway:D

hi,

i got a message from night prowler gary (the above adress can't be used to contact him, you have to use his company's adress) and he told me

they'd stock blocks 1 3/4" wide and 1 1/2" high, which i could stack onto each other to reach 3".

besides that i don't wont to do so and prefer one solid block, i was a little confused about the exact with of our rear springs.

i cannot really measure on my car, because they are wrapped in some kind of aluminium sheet metal

now i always thought we'd have 2" and the bigger cars (desoto & chrysler) have 2 1/2", or did i dream that? so these blocks would be TOO narrow for me?

did they change that after the war? mine's a P-10, maybe they're even narrower?:confused:

but i am sure one of you knows ;)

Fred, I just went and measured both my 1940 Australian Dodge(Plymouth chassis and body shell, etc) and 1941 Plymouth (Sth African build BUT is USA everything) and they BOTH use 1 & 3/4" wide springs, the 41 Coupe has 2" lowering blocks that a friend made out of 2" square tube, about 6" long with the tube ends blocked off.....works fine.......I would have made these myself but my mate beat me to it......lol........the tube should only cost a few marks........lol........andyd

Fred..get twos sets and stack them..then have them tig welded together..about the fastest easiest approach outside of cutting a block of aluminum and making your own..I have used socket head screws, drilled and tapped the block and used these for the locator pin and drilled the hole in the other end as the receiver..

yeah, suppose i could do that, but i have to consider the shipping costs.

when i have to tinker a kit after having exepensive stuff sent over from the states, it wouldn't make sense any more.

guess i'll have them built here, if i don't find a complete quality set.

I'm a little surprised, because when I bought mine from him he had 1-1/2", 3", and 4". Maybe he sold them all; I guess there isn't that much demand for the narrow blocks.

Fred.........make them yourself outa 2" square tube, they overhang each side of the spring 1/8"..........which is buggar all.......lol.....personally I would NOT go more than 3" high blocks, if you want it lower, then I'd either get new, flatter/lowered springs or reverse the eye in the rear of the main leaf which will get you another 1" lower........andyd

marty: yes, i think so, too. maybe most of the really low cars out there have swapped rear ends, perhaps i'll have new rear springs fabricated next year.

it's not that expensive... but thanks for the adress anyway!

andy: guess your're right there, i'll just check out how low i really want to go

by disconnecting the springs from the frame and lower the car with a jack, checking axle housing and exaust clearance.
