I'm looking for a part number for the rear seal on the 3-speed tranny. I'd figure I'd make more friends at my local parts store if I show up prepared like that. If I can't find it locally, I'll have to call up one of the blokes in Massachusetts I guess.

I got the old seal out quite easily by removing the rear section that holds the seal, speedometer gear, and e-brake assembly. I was preparing for a tough battle by attempting to pull it out from the rear, but removing the 4 bolts that hold the housing on and pounding it out from the back side proved to be a piece of cake. It's a lot easier to clean all the parts, too. The old e-brake band is soaked in gear oil, though. The Dodge engineers sure picked a great location for it!

Do you have the Chrysler part number from the parts book? For Plymouth trucks (pre-war) the three speed transmission used the same seal as early 1930s cars: 600420.

I don't have a modern cross for that number but older cross-references are:

National 5737

Victor 49115

Being post-war, you may/probably have a different number for the seal but starting with the Chrysler part number has really helped me in finding cross references.

Also, take a close look at the seal you removed. Quite often there is a number stamped on the metal somewhere. That might be the OEM supplier's part number or an old aftermarket part number. Those can also help a lot in finding a modern equivalent.

According to my parts manual the rear seal for all Pilot House 3 speed transmissions is 600420. So you can use Tod's cross references with confidence.

Merle

Beware that those two cross references are old and not current part numbers for those manufacturers. But they might give a place to start looking.

That happens to be the seal used in my 1933 PD. And I have one on the shelf somewhere, but you can't have it. :)

You might try Egge Machine in Southern California as a possible source.

John,

I had oil leaking from both the front and rear of my transmission. Expected I'd need to pull it to fix these leaks. Subsequentially I discovered I had overfilled it when it was jacked up in frront with the rear wheels on the ground. Finally got to check it on a lift where it was level, and drained nearly a cup of extra grease out of the fill plug hole.

Now my transmission is dry at each end. Mebby this should be a sticky for others. It's easy to overfill these gear boxes, and when this happens, they do end o leak.

You might want to check this out before you go for broke. JMHO

Thanks...I'm going to Orange Engine first thing tomorrow and see if they can work their magic with that number. There's an older fella that works there that used to be the Mopar parts representative for southern Cal. back in the 50s through the 70s. Every time I go in there and give him my truck year and model, he starts rattling off random specs and part numbers. Hopefully he'll be working tomorrow.

The tranny is actually out of the vehicle. I'm cleaning it up and painting it as part of my engine overhaul project. When I took off the rear e-brake section as mentioned in the first thread post, I found the bolt holes were also a source of oil leakage, especially since a couple of them are below the fill plug level. I will apply RTV to these bolts upon reassembly.

Well, the old numbers didn't work. They cross-referenced to a seal that had an o.d. of around 4.5", which is about twice as big as the original size.

No big deal, though....I called up Andy B back east and they have one in stock.

I'm wondering if someone's reproducing these seals nowdays or if he bought up all the old stock?
