P-12 Tommy Posted September 17, 2009 Report Posted September 17, 2009 Hey guys, I decided to take the plunge and paint my parking/turn signal light bulbs amber. I know it's not original, but I like the contrast between the white headlights and the amber. People can see the lights better. If anybody's interested it's: Tamiya Color Clear Orange Acrylic paint X-26. Got it at the hobby shop. Quote
T120 Posted September 17, 2009 Report Posted September 17, 2009 Hi Tommy,Looks good to me.I understand from your post you painted the bulb not the lens.Still using 6 volt system? Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted September 17, 2009 Author Report Posted September 17, 2009 Yeah Ralph, Still 6 volt. I painted the bulb, not the lens. Put two coats on with a small brush. One hour drying time between coats. Looks just like store bought. Tom Quote
T120 Posted September 17, 2009 Report Posted September 17, 2009 (edited) Tommy,As I mentioned - your photos look good.On a car I bought a while back one of the previous owners had painted the inside of the lens to conform to present standards. The colour was awful. One of the first things I did when I got the car was to remove the paint with lacquer thinner.I just might give your method a try...Ralph Edited September 17, 2009 by Ralph D25cpe Quote
WatchingWolf Posted September 18, 2009 Report Posted September 18, 2009 Browse truck stops. In the early 90s I bought a kit of rubber or silicon bulb covers for about $6 that had enough bulb rubbers in it to turn all the interior lights in my four door Olds purple. Seems there were single bulb covers in all colors and they were reusable. Quote
clubcoupe Posted September 18, 2009 Report Posted September 18, 2009 Hey...that looks nice. I bought out a few boxes of NOS stuff a while back and got some amber light caps that are plastic and snap over a bulb using a spring. I put a set of them on my 52 Pontiac because my hood ornament glows amber and when the park lights are on it all matches and looks nice. These are 1960's accessories, copyright on the package was like 1962... I'll probably put a set on my 46 Dodge also once I get it ready. I'd say something similar could still be found at a truck stop, like someone else mentioned. Dave Quote
wayfarerstranger Posted September 18, 2009 Report Posted September 18, 2009 what kind of paint did you use ? thanx ok i re read it again thanx for the info Quote
1940plymouth Posted September 18, 2009 Report Posted September 18, 2009 In 1968 I had a 1956 Ford 2dr sedan, I bought some amber paint that was made specifically for painting the signal light lenses from Western Auto. I wonder if that type of paint for the lenses is still available? I have looked at the area auto stores, have not seen anything that resembles it. Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted September 18, 2009 Author Report Posted September 18, 2009 One thing nice is you can't see the amber until you turn 'em on. Tom Quote

RobertKB Posted September 19, 2009 Report Posted September 19, 2009 The lenses on my '53 Plymouth were painted amber when I got it many years ago and it was the first thing I changed. I don't mind the amber lights on new cars but prefer the clear on the older ones. Just personal preference I guess. Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted September 19, 2009 Author Report Posted September 19, 2009 I myself wouldn't want amber lenses. It would look gaudy. You can't see the painted bulbs until they are on or flash. Tom Quote
