Dale Uhrich Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 does anyone know if the b1b and b1c rear gear sets are the same? I know the bolt patterns are different, is that all? Quote
Merle Coggins Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 Differentials are the same in 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks, and are also the same as Mopar cars of the same vintage. The brakes and drums are different though. Merle Quote
Dale Uhrich Posted July 16, 2009 Author Report Posted July 16, 2009 Thank you i would rather part out my 3/4 ton than my spare b1b Quote
grey beard Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 Hey Dale, Are you looking for a taller rear ratio? I believe if memory serves that we both have the same size tires. I also still have the 4:10 rear, and it does get a little busy after sixty mph. Sure would like to try a 3:54 . . . . . . Quote
MBF Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 I've got a 3:55 in my '78 half ton Dodge. She's starting to wind up pretty good at 65, but will cruise at 60 pretty comfortably. Not sure what the revs are, but its a slant 6 w a 1:1 3rd gear 3spd. Just my 2 cents. Quote
Dale Uhrich Posted July 19, 2009 Author Report Posted July 19, 2009 i located a chrysler rear gear 1949-1950 with 3.37 gears. I want to remove my spare 4.1 to combine the two so when i change i have one ready to install. also the will prove all fits before i tear mine apart. Quote
1937 Dodge Posted July 20, 2009 Report Posted July 20, 2009 (edited) Dale, Please keep us posted on your 3.37 gear swap. I hope it is an easy swap. It was my understanding that the 3.37 third member from 49-59 may not fit our rear axles. That's why I am going with the 3.54 from a 48 Windsor. Are you going to swap out the ring and pinion instead of the whole third member? Watch the spline count. Edited July 21, 2009 by 1937 Dodge Quote
grey beard Posted August 3, 2009 Report Posted August 3, 2009 Dale, Like you, I also have a 4;11 now and wish for a taller gear. It is my thinking that to do that amount of work for a 3:73 would hardly make enough difference to bother. I am hoping to find a 3:54 or lower rear from a car. AND, speaking of swapping lumps, if you found the axle splines were different, could you not just swap the axles along with the diffeferential. Seems like there would be no reason for it not working then. At the Macungie show this weekend, I spoke with an older gent who has a 53 Pilothouse there at the show - nice truck. He said he has a 2:93 rear from a later model pickup with automatic. Never heare of this ratio, but he said he can cruise at 70 with no strain. He's driven his truck to Colorado Springs and to Texas, so I guess he knows what he's talking about. Must be nice . . . Quote
Young Ed Posted August 3, 2009 Report Posted August 3, 2009 Dave swapping the axles would work as long as they are the same length and have the same taper for the drums. More then likely your better idea is to swap the side gears to match your existing axles. Quote
