think there should be three colors green 0 to 30, yellow 30 to 50, red 50 and above.

check member David Maxwell's web site from his member page, he details how to repair this Safety Sentinal feature. Should be steady though not flashing.

The yellow must be the first color to fade out. Mine goes from light green to white to light red, and I had no idea that the intermediate color should be yellow!

Thanks. I didn't know about the color change. I figure that the flashing is do to the fact that the pointer starts to move back and forth and won't hold steady at about 35. It's so much fun discovering new things about a car. I've had this car about 1 year and on the road about 3 months.

A couple of months ago I was at a Mopar club meeting and I was showing some guys the knob that glows red when turned on under the left side of the dash to see if anyone knew what it was for. Most members have 60's and 70's cars so it was a mystery. I was turning it on and off. I was thinking that maybe it was a map light but couldn't understand why it would be red. Then someone said, "Bob, your backup light is on, its off, on, off." Oh, it turns on the backup light! I thought that the light was broke because it never came on when the car was in reverse. I do not drive it much at night and never tried turning it on in the dark. The other night when I noticed the dash changing colors, I was wondering was the lever switch on the right under the dash was. So I moved it and the dash light went off. Mystery solved. Does this car hold anymore secrets?

probably, thats part of the fun. You switch that controls the dash light may also be a three position. We jokingly refer to the settings as dim dimmer and off.

Up behind the speedo there is a small oil cup. This should have a couple drops of light oil 3 in 1, or sewing machine/hair clipper oil, every once in a while, this will help smooth out your speedo needle. While you are back there, you can remove the drive cable it unscrews. then carefull remove the drive worm from the cable. Be cautious during this to keep from getting grease on your carpet and upholstery. Then clean and relube the worm. Graphite works best but lithium will work also. Hold a rag near the end of the cable and lube it along its lenght as you slide it back in.

Hitting both of those should take a lot of your needle jump away.

As noted, get up to over 50 at night and see if the light changes to red.

Another thing you might adress while back thee is the lamps themselves, lots of time pulling them out and wiping the accumulated dust of wil brighten things considerably.

And if you are like a ot of us, it a lot easier to work under the dash when you pull the lower seat cushion out.

Now -- here's a really dumb thing.

I had a 47 P15 coupe back in the 1970s....pretty nice at that time.

I THOUGHT I remembered the radio dial changing colors when you changed the tone control, or --some knob.

But, now, I imagine it was the speedo changing, not the radio.

Been so long since I had that car......have really forgotten details.

Of course, the radio on the convert does not work......so even if it

did change dial colors, I couldn't tell.

Did not know about the colors on the speedo at that time.

In fact, there were many things about the Plymouth I didn't know

til joining this forum. Next I need to re-do colors on a spare

speedo and install.

Oh......those lighted knobs under the dash usually turned on either

the heater fan or fog lights. Guess the P O decided it would be a

handy way to operate the backup lights....on your car Bob.

I have a toggle switch below the left end of the dash to operate a

courtesy light I hung up under the dash. I don't have the push

button switches on the door post to operate such a light.

You can pretty much invent things as needed with these cars.

I also have 3 extra push buttons here and there under the dash -

to operate my oogah horn, old beep horn, and siren. Some folks

have one of the addon horn buttons on the steering column if their

horn ring on the steering wheel quit working.

Lots of fun stuff possible.:D

Bob I just heard of the radio thing too. We were at a local radio shop here in MN called electo tech. He fixed the am-fm we found for dads 69. Very nice guys and a neat shop. Anyway we got to talking and my dad told him he liked how the dimmer in his 51 radio had its own control vs the dash lights. I asked him if my 48 had that and he said no but it should have red yellow green for the tone control. I haven't been in it in the dark yet to see if it works yet though.

Shel.......when I took off the cover from the side of the radio yesterday, mine

looked like the one with the bulb only.

Evidently, if you have the color changer--

it goes over the bulb....is that right??

I have at least two more radios....one in the car, and one in a box in my storage

building. Hmmmm.....oh----that's what my radio did when I hooked power to it....

hummed, vibrator seemed to work, but no sound when I hooked a little

speaker to it. I wonder if that metal capacitor goes bad.....probably does.....and

where can you find a replacement?
