I decided to get a new credit card for use on the internet only. It has such a small limit that I won't be bankrupted if anybody gets their figurative hands on the account number. But I'm still careful what I use it for.

It's really a shame when you have to do that. Even with that though they could access personal information from the card numbers. That opens the door to your other accounts. We don't even like to write checks anymore because they have the account number, bank numbers and your address on it. About the only place we write a check is at the grocery store or to pay the monthly bills. Everything else, we find out the cost and make sure we have the cash to pay for it when we buy it. Will only use a credit card with someone we know. It's like going back to the stone age. Anything I get off ebay, etc. I buy a money order for, unless it's someone well known, then I may use a credit card over the phone only. The internet may be nice for some, but it's even nicer for the criminals. Now they don't have to confront people to steal from them.

Recently I got an email from Bank of America offering a new service where you can get a one-time only credit card number that points back to your regular credit card. That way no one else can use that number if it gets hijacked.

Marty, I wouldn't trust any emails from any bank and I also wouldn't reply to them by email. If I wanted to call them, I wouldn't use the phone number in any email either. I'd look it up in the phone book and call if interested. I get all kinds of emails from various banks, including my own. They all get deleted without opening though. To begin with, no bank has my email address, not even my own, so right away I know they're fake emails. So, even if they can give you a card like that, I'd call them from scratch and check, not off the email.

I have also gotten emails from banks.....none of which I use.....saying they need to update their information, or information had been lost, or some logical sounding reason why they want your info. I usually first look up the bank for their phishing information address and send them the email.....then delete it.

Lets find out who he is and Kill him.

Good luck doing that. These people use so many fake email addresses and coffee house computers that it's almost imposable to find them. Even the law has trouble doing that!

These con artist are not just using email but also the phone. I get calls all the time at the business phone from people saying they are calling to upgrade my business line, and give me better rates. Then they ask how many lines you have. At that point I usually ask them to give me the billing account number (different from the phone number). Of course they can't do that so I hang up. Then if you call back your phone carrier, they don't know anything about the so called promotion. So it's all one big scam.

Few weeks back, some may remember, I mentioned the new person with the very "catchy" name to say the least..I noticed a lot of new members that may be very well on the up and up but.."just have not built up any points yet"

Some others...very suspicious...........IMHO

We exist to share and help others..however I remember before I made my first post, I read pages upon pages of topic question and replies to get a feel for the forum members and the attitude of the forum in general..it is time well spent..and I highly recommend it to any new member..there is gold in these veins..one has but to dig a bit..

Well, in this particular case it didn't arrive at my home email address, it was delivered via the BofA internal system tied to my on-line access, so I know it was from them. Other than that, your point is well taken.

Frank,

With all due respect, that is a pretty significant accusation against a new member and not very complete and not totally clear.

There has been a pretty big wasps' nest stirred up.

I am far from being an IT whizz but am not a total incompetent, and I have no idea what you are talking about.

Can you elaborate?

Rgds, Tim

If I'm following this discussion correctly at all it seems like there is a chance that Vitamindart has a virus or trojan on his machine that allowed someone else to redirected it for his/her own use.....maybe to Frank's machine. I didn't understand what Frank saw that raised his hackles however. So, I'm out on a limb quite aways speculating. It is very possible to redirect work or commands through a third party (middleman computer) and make it look like that third party is up to something. And, the third party doesn't even know his machine has been hacked.

Frank, I think your seeing a false positive from some of your security software or caused by some other source. The forum itself reads records from a database. They don't contain executable code. If you clicked on a link in a post that went to another site it is possible to access malicious code. The only way to add records is through the forum software and it will not accept any scripting code. I have checked with vBulletin and their are no known security issues addressing your topic. While it is never possible to be 100% sure this can't happen I would suggest it is something specific to your computer system as no one else has reported a similar incident.
