claybill Posted April 30, 2009 Report Posted April 30, 2009 yes i have 4 plymouths...but almost 2years now, i bought a gorgeous 60 impala for highway trips. and of course i added power disc brakes..a nice unit for sure. then the problemssss... this is a high dollar car..and i havent driven it for 2 years because i cant get the brakes to work!!!!!!! after 3 mechanics and more than 2 grand..we thought we had it.....nope!! it was a problem of bleeding the caliper..being aftermarket made in china it didnt bleed ON THE CAR. it had to be bench bled..ok..basic questoin; i parked it over the winter in garage...started it up...no pedal! to the FLOOR! .luckily a hairs pedal left kept me from going thru the house!! CHECKED master cyl ...FULL no drips on the floor...no fluid runs down the tire..took off the power booster and there was no back leakage from the m/cyl. i will try bleeding it again soon as i can get it towed....until then..why would it loose all pedal over sitting a few months and where did the fluid go? claybillllll is there a chevy forum as hip as this one!!? Norm's Coupe Posted April 30, 2009 Report Posted April 30, 2009 Bill, Don't remember if it was my 80 Olds Cutlass or my 81 Olds Cutlass company cars. But.........on one of those the same thing would happen. Had no brakes when the engine was cold. Since both were under warranty I don't remember the exact problem, but it was some problem with the power booster itself. Dealer fixed it and all was good. Also remember something about having to do with the vacuum system not working correctly. At any rate, it had nothing to do with the amount of brake fluid in the car, or leaky cylinders. Like you, I did have just a small amount of pedal, but it felt like the car was not going to stop. Brakes worked fine when the engine was warmed up a little. Try warming yours up before moving it to see if the problem disappears. If it goes away, look at the vacuum system for a problem. All the above assumes you are not leaking fluid someplace. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 30, 2009 Report Posted April 30, 2009 actually it sounds like it is internally bypassing in the master cylinder...this can and does happen in cars that just sit... Quote
dezeldoc Posted April 30, 2009 Report Posted April 30, 2009 actually it sounds like it is internally bypassing in the master cylinder...this can and does happen in cars that just sit... Tim has it right, the master is bypassing, the booster has nothing to do with having a padal or not. hard pedal yes but not no pedal. who's kit did you use? Quote
greg g Posted April 30, 2009 Report Posted April 30, 2009 just for grins, are your calipers oriented with the bleeders at the top?? I have read the if they are mounted with the bleeders on the bottom will not bleed properly if at all. Quote

Remove the lines from the MC, insert small nail into lines, head must cover hole. Reconnect lines lightly to MC. Hard pedal, good MC. Soft or fading pedal, bad MC. Quote
claybill Posted May 1, 2009 Author Report Posted May 1, 2009 ok all...tomorrow i will .. 1...connect new m/cyl. 2...then do the nail trick.. 3...punt bill Quote
old woolie Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 I'd try the nail trick before I'd change the MC. Quote
