longtops Posted April 10, 2009 Report Posted April 10, 2009 Hello everyone! been a while since I've been on. Hope alls well! I have a question concerning the gyromatic,If I were to consider swapping the gyro to a straight manuel trans,no fluid drive just 3on the tree, what does it take or is this even possible. Not real overly fond of the gyro, other than this the ole Coronet is sporting new exhaust with a 3 chamber flowmaster with duel tailpipes REALLY sounds awsome , not got the splatter sound of the cherry bum, real deep rumble.Been driving it a lot and no problems yet.Does it sound like I'm kinda thrilled about the ole car? Phil Martin Posted April 10, 2009 Report Posted April 10, 2009 I have a 50 coronet. The three speed would be nice but my gyro works great and is not really as slow as most people think. Sure is a great car to drive. Love it! Quote
longtops Posted April 10, 2009 Author Report Posted April 10, 2009 phil have you changed the fluid in the drive? Every one says this will make a big difference.Mine seems to feel as if it has some slippage in high gear, maybe just me not knowing how ita supposed to feel. Quote
Phil Martin Posted April 10, 2009 Report Posted April 10, 2009 Checkd it when I got it.It was full with no problem so I don't see any reason to change it. Set the timing up a hair and found out how critical idle speed is. The shift point went higher with faster idle. Mine has a noise kind of like valve rattle when winding up to shift. Can't make it do it out of gear so pretty sure its in fluid unit. But no slippage at all. Quote
longtops Posted April 10, 2009 Author Report Posted April 10, 2009 Phil How tight do you wind it in low before you let up for the shift to second then how tight for high shift? Quote
James_Douglas Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 Phil, There are several reasons to change the fluid. The viscosity index additives only have a life of about 5 to 7 years. When the oil heats up during use with the VI additives degraded, the oil will thin out and you will not transmit as much power from the driver to the runner. Also, the anti-foaming agents also degrade and this has a big impact on take off performance. I would recommend that everyone should change their fluid once every seven years. After a year of research, talking with the original Gyrol people, and a chemical analysis of some original (never used) MOPAR fluid, the best match I have come up with is: MOBILE DTE Light Circulating Oil ISO 32 Available at Granger. Best, James Quote
Phil Martin Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 On the low side it will shift to 2nd at 5 mph on high side will shift at about 18 mph When driv ing at any speed if holding steady no noise get on a pull and it rattles. I really don't think it is engine noise. Quote
greg g Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 The normal driving procedure is to leave the selector in the highrange using the two upper gears. Low range was for starting a heavily loaded vehicle, starting in soft surfaces, and for speed controll on long down grades. Most folks just drove on the street using the upper range. Not a performance transmission by any means. Quote
Phil Martin Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 I normally leave mine in the upper range. Quote
scottyv47 Posted April 12, 2009 Report Posted April 12, 2009 i'm a newbee here, been a mopar guy for 40 years, just got my first oldie, 47 plymouth, before that all i had was 60's and 70's mopars, do you have any audio, or video of the flattie running with the new flowmaster, i would love to here it, i was thinking i wanted a glasspack on my 47 for that oldtime hotrod sound, but the way you described it, i'm thinking maybe a flowmaster myself, mabee if you have some, you could post it on youtube, thanks, scottyv Quote

longtops Posted April 12, 2009 Author Report Posted April 12, 2009 hello scottyv47 I dont have any way to post video. The flow sounds nothing like the smittys or the cherry bomb, when the smittys reach a certain rpm range they have the popping splattering sound. The Flow has adeeper mellow tone. The best sound I've heard on a 6.Keep in mind my car is not true duels it is a single in duel out muffler. It would sound totally different with true twins. Also a lot of folks like the sound of the smittys and the bumbs, check out Dons on youtube, his sounds awsome too! Quote
scottyv47 Posted April 13, 2009 Report Posted April 13, 2009 hey do you have a cell phone, if so and it has video, you can take video of the car running, then email it to yourself and put it on youtube, it sounds complicated, but it is simple, take the video, then push send, when the phone asks where to send it, put in your email address, use the abc, symbols button to put in the @ sign and dot, then push send again, and it will send it to your email, then from there right click on it, and push save the file, it might not let you open it, depending if your computer has that type of media player installed, but it will let you save it, then open youtube, and setup an account, or use an exsisting account and upload it, its simple, just click upload video, then browse, and click the file you saved, i use my cellphone for most of my youtube video's now, its easier than dealing with my digital camera, once you send it from your phone, click save contact, and you can save your email address so you don't have to put it in every time, just go to my contacts, and there it will be, thanks, scottyv Quote
