wayfarerstranger Posted April 4, 2009 Report Posted April 4, 2009 where does the power steering unit hose`s on a 53 54 Plymouth connect to ?? Quote
wayfarerstranger Posted April 5, 2009 Author Report Posted April 5, 2009 WHERE do the hose go from the back of the generator ? is there another part that attaches to the steering box on those cars ? or do you need the column also from the car ?? besides the unit that goes to the back of the generator what else would you need to make the conversion ? i know what the units look like on newer cars but i have never examined one from a early 50`s Plymouth ,,THANX Quote
mackster Posted April 5, 2009 Report Posted April 5, 2009 I got one on my desoto. . . I will post some pictures later if you think they may help you. . . Quote

1955 plymouth Posted April 5, 2009 Report Posted April 5, 2009 I have a '55 Belvedere with power steering, not sure if it is same or not I will also get you some pics of mine in about an hour or so. Quote
wayfarerstranger Posted April 5, 2009 Author Report Posted April 5, 2009 the year really doesn`t matter i think any thing from mid to late 50`s would bolt right on if you knew what to look for ,,, i see several on ebay but just the part the fluid goes in not the part that goes to the steering itself .. thanx Quote
1955 plymouth Posted April 5, 2009 Report Posted April 5, 2009 Looks like you might need the entire column, judging by what I see on mine, you may need the entire steering column. I sure hope the pics I took will help, It's kind of hard to get a angle with complete shot of the system. Quote
1955 plymouth Posted April 5, 2009 Report Posted April 5, 2009 Hope this helps. If you need some more specific shots or some close up of any one item let me know and I will get it for you. Good luck. Quote
wayfarerstranger Posted April 5, 2009 Author Report Posted April 5, 2009 THANX the pictures are great ,,, kinda what i figured it would be ,, and you are right if and when i can find one i`ll probably need to snag the steering column and all the dodads that go with it ,, like i said i see the upper part on ebay a lot i just ever see the column part ,, best bet would be to find an old parts car ,, good luck on that one HUH !! THANX for taking the time to take & send the pictures ,, if anyone does run across one i`d be willing to swap DON COATNEY`S old blue car for it ,,, CHANCE Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 5, 2009 Report Posted April 5, 2009 oh man..there was a set up being sold at the swap meet for 50.00...Ron told me about it...they can be a nightmare to work on.. Quote
wayfarerstranger Posted April 5, 2009 Author Report Posted April 5, 2009 Thanx for the tip TIM , i am just toying with the idea maybe i`ll just do some more pushups !! Now that the weather is getting better i hope i can come to visit you !!! CHANCE Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 5, 2009 Report Posted April 5, 2009 chance..with todays smaller pumps from the imports, the optional power racks available that can be easily adapted..(most are internal regulated thus the pump is of no real concer)...I cannot in no way think of any good reason to put power steering on a car that never had it optional by way of retrofit of first model set ups..just to antiquated..now if you had a 54 Plymouth, first year PS option..then maybe and only maybe if returning the car for show purposes.. 1955 plymouth Posted April 5, 2009 Report Posted April 5, 2009 There is a '55 Belveder in CO. with power everything for around $900.00 I think. Search the web for "1955 Belvedere" and you should see it Not sure how bad you want this stuff, the car is said to have power steering, power seat, power windows, I guess all the factory options of that year. BobT-47P15 Posted April 6, 2009 Report Posted April 6, 2009 In the red, grey and white service manual, there is a fairly lengthy explanation of the 1954 power steering system and how it works. No good pictures I could make out as to just how it exactly attaches to the end of the column. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted April 6, 2009 Report Posted April 6, 2009 This picture of the pump doesn't show much other than it was attached to the rear of the generator. Quote
