1949 p-15 Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 I am about to replace the glass in my P-15 Coupe. I am considering eliminating the vent Windows on my doors and converting to one piece Door Windows. Has anyone done this? If so how good did it work? Thanks Quote
greg g Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 I for one would not give up my vent windows. With them properly adjusted, I can drive window down even witht he outside temp below freezing. I have really missed vent windows since most manufacturers went to ac as standard equipment and did away with them. Noise and buffeting at speeds above 30 always have my windoes up in modern cars. Norm's Coupe Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 I agree with the others on the vent windows. But........if you must put in a one piece window, check the street rod catalogs. You see a lot of street rods that have done away with the vent windows. I believe it's just a kit that supplies a universal window channel that you cut to the right length. Not sure, but you may also have to change the window regulator. Quote
randroid Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 Gents, On a VW Bug forum to which I belong this discussion has come up repeatedly and my take is that 90% of the members who have done it or driven in cars to which it has been done think the end result sucks. Aesthetics aside, there are leaks that weren't there before that are a bear to eliminate and as Greg and Dennis mentioned there are benefits you lose. Goggle "The Samba", go to the classic Bug forum, and read the posts about it there. (My '67 Bug, with the exceptions of the shape of the hood and having only two doors, has the same silhouette as my P-15.) You'll probably decide against doing it. -Randy Quote

dezeldoc Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 The problem with doing it is the windwing mounts to the inside frame, unlike a bug that mounts in the door frame. this makes it harder to do and you will need to make a new inside frame, also making the channel for the U- channel weather strip is a problem. I was going to do mine but to much work for what little you would gain from it. not saying it is impossable but you will have quite a bit of time in it. I have done several bugs back in the day and never had any air or water leaks. Quote

As for a P15, is the door opening straight, on my D25 it looks like the vent window is on a different plane that the side glass. Quote
cwcars88 Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 On one of my P-15s the top is chopped 2 1/2'' and the vent window is removed. There should be no air or water leaks as the window channel is one piece, up the front across the top and down the back side. The same as new cars. And yes you do lose the benifit of some ventellation. On my stock p-15 I have a small fan laying in the rear package tray that I can turn on and it will keep all windows defogged. Wayne Quote
Olddaddy Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 I've done it on a 50 Plymouth door from a parts car as a mockup. I used the original window mechanism and extended the channel the glass sits in forward. I also moved the vertical channel the glass rides in forward. The most important part is to put a vertical arm down below to hold the glass upright as you lose the front vertical edge that is usually the guide. Quote
