David A. Posted March 12, 2009 Report Posted March 12, 2009 I was looking through ebay and saw some vinyl decals available for 1948 - 1953 Dodge truck gauges. They are $25 for the set. The item number is 150331926792. It says they have 8 sets available. Thought some of you on this forum might be interested. David Anderson Quote
Reg Evans Posted March 13, 2009 Report Posted March 13, 2009 That style only matches the 48-50 gauges. The 51-53 have a different colored background. Isn't the speedo dial a little concave with a raised circle in the center. And then there's the cutout for the odometer with it's concaved edges. Quote
bobaloo11 Posted March 13, 2009 Report Posted March 13, 2009 I'm with you Reg. I did purchase a set, but did ask if he could just send the numbering and graphics with out black background. That would be great then I could just put the white lettering on my own background. It would be better for him to do it this way if the backgrounds are different from different years. Putting a flat sticker on a concave face with a raised center wont be easy. I may use a circle cutter and trim out the raised center area and use only the outer "ring" of numbers/graphics. Hopefully the transition area won't show. I have temporarily assembled my speedo with the incorrect fonts. This was just the lettering stuck to my own black background, but figured it was better than nothing. I have attatched a picture. WITH the 80 in the right direction. I'll let everyone know how it comes out. Hope the guy can do it! Quote
MBF Posted March 13, 2009 Report Posted March 13, 2009 I don't mean to hijack this thread, but after driving my PH for the last 10 yrs and looking at the nice job you did on the speedo face, I gotta believe that that anything past the 50mph mark could have been left blank. I don't think my 1 ton would do better than 50 unless I was going over a cliff! Not complaining, just stating a fact. Nice job on the relettering job. Mike Quote
Merle Coggins Posted March 13, 2009 Report Posted March 13, 2009 A good vinyl decal can be put over an uneven surface. It is quite flexible and can be masaged around and over the raised portion at the center of the speedo face. Then cut out the Odo space enough that the edges can be wrapped around the edge of the plate. I know that will work because that's what my friend at Blast Graphics did for mine. Bobaloo, any particular reason why you reset your odo to 000000? Quote
Young Ed Posted March 13, 2009 Report Posted March 13, 2009 Merle I reset mine to 000000 too. Didn't know the proper old mileage(i got a whole box of speedometers with my truck) and the engine etc was rebuilt anyways. Now have any of you guys seen decals to restore the odometer wheels? In preperation for my eventual build of a 40 plymouth pickup I've been redoing a speedometer for it. Some of the odometer numbers have flacking off paint. Quote
Reg Evans Posted March 13, 2009 Report Posted March 13, 2009 Ed, I use to make and sell instrument faces and odometer lettering back in the late 70's. Sold the business to these guys. Maybe they are still doing the odometer lettering. http://www.showcarquality.com/dashGlass.htm Quote
Young Ed Posted March 13, 2009 Report Posted March 13, 2009 Reg can I mention your name and try for a discount? Or maybe that would get me higher pricing Quote
Reg Evans Posted March 13, 2009 Report Posted March 13, 2009 It's been 30 years. I never dealt with Scott Young Sr., just Scott Young Jr. He use to sell my reproductions at various local swap meets. He would remember me of course. I talked to Sr. a few years ago and I got no respect. Quote
Mario Loya B1B Posted March 13, 2009 Report Posted March 13, 2009 David, Thanks for the heads up. I just ordered a set myself. However, I wish Reg still owned the business. I would much raher give him my money. Quote
Reg Evans Posted March 13, 2009 Report Posted March 13, 2009 Me too Mario. I think you'll have to cut a center circle out of the eBay ones just at the bottom of the convex circle. Quote
bobaloo11 Posted March 13, 2009 Report Posted March 13, 2009 Reg, Why did I set the odo back to "0"? Since I had no idea of the actual mileage, I didn't even know if it was the original speedo and I was redoing it, I just put it back to zero. It was at 40some thousand miles, I knew that couldn't be right. The title said "mileage unknown-exceeded mechanical capabilities." I don't have the resources to restore this back to factory new condition, so I'm not doing it to commit fraud. So I guess it was just because. Quote
Reg Evans Posted March 13, 2009 Report Posted March 13, 2009 Bob, I see by your profile photo why you broke your 1st and 2nd cars. Looks like you have a tendency to get a little squirrelly eh? Quote
bobaloo11 Posted March 14, 2009 Report Posted March 14, 2009 Yup, me and "A-Rod" shared needles too! As for the cars I paid $150 for each of those cars and drove them for close to a year each. I was very young and I wasn't nice to them but they took a lickin'. I sold each of them for what I paid. The '68 needed a new 3rd member (A Pig is what we used to call them). I got one for under $20and sold the car. The '66 just started blowing oil, but I still sold it. They were both very rusty 318 mobiles, the '66 had the old style 318. It looked like a big block! LOL!
