Guest jjmorrse Posted January 8, 2007 Report Posted January 8, 2007 It is about valve adjusting time again. Last time I ordered gaskets from Kanter, and it took a long time, and the $ felt high. Although they worked well, I would like to find a more convenient source. Who do you all get your gaskets from? I know NAPA carries a lot of parts, but the local guys don't have much luck finding stuff unless I have a part number. Also, I appreciate all of the input from members. It has kept me from re-inventing the wheel several times. J.M. Quote

Guest Nile Limbaugh Posted January 8, 2007 Report Posted January 8, 2007 They're easy to make yourself. Get a sheet of cork at the local parts store and cut them out with a sharp shop knife. Nothing to it. Quote
TodFitch Posted January 8, 2007 Report Posted January 8, 2007 Ditto to Niles suggestion: Make your own valve cover gaskets from sheet cork. Quick, simple and the will not have shrunk or gotten stiff from age sitting on some warehouse shelf. Quote
Young Ed Posted January 8, 2007 Report Posted January 8, 2007 I'm sure you could go to napa and get ones quite cheap. I bought a pan gasket set for my 48 there and it was like 5 bucks. Much easier then trying to cut your own. Quote
1just4don Posted January 8, 2007 Report Posted January 8, 2007 I am sure I will be regarded appropriately as a stupid newbie for asking this. How often do you/should you/adjust the valves on flat head motors??? I drove them for years (in my youth) and NEVER known that cover to be off ,ever, on any of the cars I drove. My thinking is once they are in adjustment they stay that way!! BUT I have been wrong, often, and severely before and will be again!!! So how often 'should' they be adjusted?? And how often are 'you' adjusting them??? (I guess I ask cause I DONT know!!)(and WANT to) Quote
Guest Nile Limbaugh Posted January 8, 2007 Report Posted January 8, 2007 The only time I've ever adjusted any valves (except for Chebbys) was after doing a valve job. Most of these hobby cars don't get driven that hard or that much. Quote
