eric wissing Posted January 30, 2009 Report Posted January 30, 2009 Here is a Cooper hawk that has been at our feeder this winter. I had never seen one before this year but I guess they are common to the area. I watched him snag a sparrow. I guess my bird feeder supplies birds as food. Eric Quote
greg g Posted January 30, 2009 Report Posted January 30, 2009 We had a Kestral up in our tree the other AM. He had puffed up his feathers against the cold wind and looked kind of like a Soft Ball perched up there. About 5 minutes later, there was acommotion in the front yard, and he had nailed a squirrel. Hope it stays around for a while I could use a few less squirrels around here. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted January 30, 2009 Report Posted January 30, 2009 Eric, what a great picture! A beautiful thing that bird. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 31, 2009 Report Posted January 31, 2009 I love to watch the birds of prey make a kill be it in the air or hit the ground and roll out with a meal to go... Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted January 31, 2009 Report Posted January 31, 2009 And here I spent all that time and money to build a hawk when I could have got a bird feeder and got one for free:D very nice pic! Quote
eric wissing Posted January 31, 2009 Author Report Posted January 31, 2009 I was lucky with the photo. I set it on auto and pushed the button. He was oly 4 feet away from my window. You can tell when he is near because all of the squirrels stop moving and stay close to the trunks. Heres a real raptor in the same tree: Mojo. Quote
62rebelP23 Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 was on my way out of my neighborhood one morning last spring and there was a juvenile hawk being stood down by a pair of unwilling squirrels at the corner! he was a little put off by what looked for all the world like TEAMWORK between the squirrels; one would run a few feet while the other would raise dickens and flick his tail! one P-O'd hawk; he gave up and flew off to rethink his strategy.... eric wissing Posted February 10, 2009 Author Report Posted February 10, 2009 The squirrel is an underated creature. Being a tree rat it makes sense that is a quick learner. I saved one little one a few years back and he wasn't fearful of me or my cats. I eventually convinced the cats were not friendly. I toss peanuts out to them. This one would pretend that he didn't see the first one and not move. After I threw the second one , he would grab it and then grab the first. I would throw just one and he'd just wait. Eric Quote
