aero3113 Posted December 27, 2008 Report Posted December 27, 2008 I picked up my new tires today and the look awsome. I just hope they are not too big. They are 700X15R I know that the stock tire is 670X15 bias ply. Who runs the stock 670x15 tires on their car? And if you can post a picture with someone standing next to them that would be great just so I can see the size.I just might not be used to the size of old school tires! Thanks,Keith Quote
Reg Evans Posted December 27, 2008 Report Posted December 27, 2008 I put 750 16's radials all the way around on my 42 coupe. This photo shows all 4 750's. The fronts rubbed a little on tight turns so I dropped down to 650 16's on the front. Now I wish I had gone to 700's up front because the clearance would have been fine and the car would have had a little less rake. Quote
aero3113 Posted December 27, 2008 Author Report Posted December 27, 2008 Awsome you just made my day!!! Do you think the 42 wheel wells are around the same as a 50 ? Your car looks GREAT! Quote
Don Coatney Posted December 27, 2008 Report Posted December 27, 2008 had a little less rake.[/img] You got something against a rake? Quote
Reg Evans Posted December 27, 2008 Report Posted December 27, 2008 Only when it comes to leaves Don. I like a little rake on a car but just a little. The front lower than the rear....not the reverse. Quote

I think they are close to having the same room for the wheel. Maybe someone here with a 50 can answer your question better than I can. Quote

David Maxwell Posted December 27, 2008 Report Posted December 27, 2008 ...and appear to have the look of a bias ply tire. Is that one of those new radials designed to look like a bias ply? Quote
aero3113 Posted December 27, 2008 Author Report Posted December 27, 2008 I believe so, I won them on e-bay. I tried to do a search and try to find how much the go for but had no luck. They are Sumitomo tires 700 R 15. They have no lettering on the white wall side which I like, all of the tire information is on the opposite side. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted December 28, 2008 Report Posted December 28, 2008 I was working for Lincoln Mercury after my military stint...man came in with a Lincoln Mark 5 and want that baby lower in the rear and raised in the front...most god awful looking mess I have ever encountered but hey..he paid for it..he drove out smiling...that was as ugly as and set of shackles hanging down on the rear of a car..shackles do two things..show how cheap you are to start with in profiling a car..and second is ruining the curve of a good set of springs Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted December 28, 2008 Report Posted December 28, 2008 I don't have a picture of me standing next to my bias 670 x 15 tires. Probably wouldn't do much good to see a picture like that anyway because some of us are either taller or shorter than others. However, this sticks in my mind on the height of the tires. I believe the 670 x 15 bias stands about 31" high with about a 5" wide tread surface when inflated. Again, I didn't measure mine right now, those numbers just seem to be what I remember. Quote
aero3113 Posted December 28, 2008 Author Report Posted December 28, 2008 I just measured the 700x15 tires and it looks like they stand 29 inches high and the tread width is 5 inches. If the weather is good tomorrow I will get them mounted and installed, I will also post pics. Quote

Someone else posted the size in a thread on the forum sometime back. I could be mistaking in what I remember since yours are 29 inches. Quote
Andydodge Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 Keith, those Sumitomo tyres look good, can you confirm for me whether they are radial or crossply tyres.....also do they have any part number or other numbers on them?......am trying to find them here in Australia, they look like just what I want......also what is the width of the whitewall?.......what rims are you mounting them on?.......thanks, Andy Douglas. rolliejoe Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 Just measured my dry rotted 6.70x15's and they measure 27.25" with a 4.75" tread width mounted. nice find btw! Quote
rolliejoe Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 here's a handy tire size chart: http://www.carnut.com/specs/tires.html looks fairly close to our 670-15 and 700-15 measurements. Quote
aero3113 Posted December 29, 2008 Author Report Posted December 29, 2008 They are radials, here are some numbers off the tire hope they help. 7.00 R 15 SL717 RK 230 DOT U2NV 7K6V1708 Quote
aero3113 Posted December 29, 2008 Author Report Posted December 29, 2008 So I went to the tire shop to get the tires mounted turns out that the car has been lowered or the springs just sag so much that the tires will not fit. Luckily someone told me about a spring shop in the next town over. I drove over to the shop and turns out the shop is run by an older man and he is more then willing to help me out. I think he was surprised that I want the car raised because most people my age (29) would want the car as close to the ground as possible. He was also very impressed with the tires that I found on e-bay(never saw radials that looked like that). He said that the rear will be no problem but he sounded like there might be a problem up front (I guess finding the right springs maybe). Does anyone know what size springs are the stock size for the front? Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 Springs should be easy to find. Just pick up a copy of either Street Rodder or Custom Rodder magazine and go through the ads. There are at least a couple of ads in there from well know spring companies all the time. Just call one of them and tell them what kind of car you have and you want them original height. They'll fix you up with new ones. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 Eaton Spring Company may be one choice. Might check with them. Quote
aero3113 Posted December 29, 2008 Author Report Posted December 29, 2008 Okay thanks, It looks like he might start working on the car next Monday or Tuesday, Ill keep you guys posted. Quote

Does anyone know what size springs are the stock size for the front? Did you try the new tires on the car yourself to see if they are correct in saying that they will not work? What is the difference in diameter between your old and new tires? From the profile photo of your 50 the car doesn't appear to be lowered. Quote
aero3113 Posted December 29, 2008 Author Report Posted December 29, 2008 The tires that I have on the car now are 25.5 inches tall and the front bumper sits 11 inches off the ground from the bottom of the bumper. I don't think the car was lowered I just think the springs and leaf springs have lost their spring. When looking at the rear leaf springs there is no arch in them they are completly flat, they look original so do the front springs. Here is another pic with the tires I have on now Quote
aero3113 Posted December 29, 2008 Author Report Posted December 29, 2008 Here is a pic from under the car. Look how the brake line is bent, this also makes me think the car is low. What do you guys think? Quote
aero3113 Posted December 29, 2008 Author Report Posted December 29, 2008 The height from the bottom of the stainless molding to the ground is only 7.5 inches. Quote
