longtops Posted December 26, 2008 Report Posted December 26, 2008 Hello everone and Happy New Year! Ichanged the oil today in the 50 Coronet and to my suprise the filter was a roll of Hockey Tickets! Was toilet paper used as a filter in the day?Searched all day and finally found a cartrige at tractor supply that I could modify and make work. What a day!!! Quote
Frank Elder Posted December 27, 2008 Report Posted December 27, 2008 It was a common practice in the olden days when a person could not find or afford the cartridge. Maybe the engine would run "smoother" with the TP with lanolin...lol! Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted December 27, 2008 Report Posted December 27, 2008 pure T junk..do not go back with that stuff.. Quote
longtops Posted December 27, 2008 Author Report Posted December 27, 2008 I made a cartridge filter work but its not the correct one .Any ideas on the correct one? Quote
Normspeed Posted December 27, 2008 Report Posted December 27, 2008 Here's a link to some filter info in an earlier thread: http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/showthread.php?t=6773&highlight=Fram Also, if your filter housing that had the TP in it is marked with the brand name "Frantz", hang onto it. May be junk, maybe not, but I've seen them pull in some dollars at auto swap meets. The Frantz was an aftermarket setup designed to use a roll of toilet paper as the element. Quote
longtops Posted December 27, 2008 Author Report Posted December 27, 2008 Well normspeed you hit the nail on the head, thats whats on it and the setup looks as thou it was installed yesterday. Are these reliable, any thing I should look for as to proper opperation.I know the oil pressure really came up after the oil change. What is the oil pressure supposed to be after operating temp is reached. Quote
Normspeed Posted December 28, 2008 Report Posted December 28, 2008 40 lbs at operating speed, and it can drop quite a bit at idle. Here's what I recall about the Frantz...Take a fresh roll and unwrap enough outer layers so it fits snug in the canister but not so tight that it binds. I believe you also remove the cardboard tube. assemble and voila! When I worked in gas stations in the 60's, the Frantz man would stop in every month or two to pitch his product. He had his Frantz in a Y-block 57 Ford with a gazillion miles on it and the oil on the dipstick looked like honey. Never bought or sold one but I've heard tales about the paper shredding off and clogging oil galleries. Never saw it happen myself. The last nice looking Frantz I saw at an auto swap was priced at $75 and someone bought it right after I looked it over. Trade ya for this used-but-not-abused Fram setup with Wix element.. Quote
Don Coatney Posted December 28, 2008 Report Posted December 28, 2008 You can buy a new Frantz filter today as they are still in business. http://www.wefilterit.com/products.htm Quote
aero3113 Posted December 28, 2008 Report Posted December 28, 2008 In my manual it says 40 psi oil pressure at above 30mph and any thing above 0 psi at idle is good. Quote
Normspeed Posted December 28, 2008 Report Posted December 28, 2008 Interesting Don. I had no idea they were still in business and how much they cost new. Myself, if I had one I'd probably use it, since my setup is a bypass and it sounds like the paper shredding thing might not really be a problem due to the filter screen built in. Guess I'll keep using my good old Atlas canister with the NAPA or Wix filters. Quote

Dennis Hemingway Posted December 28, 2008 Report Posted December 28, 2008 I had one of those on the 283 Chevy engine I had in my 55 Jeep. I never had a problem with it, the oil was allways clean. I don't know how it works with today's biodegradable (sp) TP. Dennis:D Quote
longtops Posted December 28, 2008 Author Report Posted December 28, 2008 I wonder if the Frantz units today use tp as back then or if they have upgraded! Quote
Normspeed Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 Yeah, the link that Don C posted has all the info on the new ones. In the FAQs They even go into just which type of TP to use. Quote
longtops Posted December 29, 2008 Author Report Posted December 29, 2008 Well the unit on the coronet may or may not be of the vintage type huh! Quote
