John Mulders Posted December 15, 2008 Report Posted December 15, 2008 haven't had time to work on the P15 for a while. But , the two yearly safety check is due and I was looking at what needed attention. A while ago the wiper broke off and I got some replacements and did not put them on (no rain , so no gain). So I put them on today to find out the wiper (even with only one) would not work. Guess the vacuum wiper motor looses too much when it gets resistance. The engine does work when there is no wiper on it. So what to do, sending it too the specialist would be very costly for me (send back and forth to US). I also have a spare motor (haven't tried that yet). I sprayed some lubricant in the vacuum line (hoping that may seal a bit). Any suggestions? How difficult is it to get the motor out from under the dash? Thanks! John Quote
martybose Posted December 15, 2008 Report Posted December 15, 2008 (snip) How difficult is it to get the motor out from under the dash? It's actually pretty easy if you remove the radio first. Yesterday I removed the wiper motor and both of the wiper pivots and arms as a unit so that I could swap out my rebuilt wiper motor and lubricate everything. The hardest part was getting myself under the dash, everything else was pretty easy. Marty Quote
Brendan D25 Posted December 15, 2008 Report Posted December 15, 2008 John, did you try squirting some water on the windshields to lessen the resistance of the wipers? If it works, take a squirt bottle of water with you to the inspection. If the inspector questions it, tell him(her) that you only use the wipers when it rains. . Brendan. Quote
John Mulders Posted December 15, 2008 Author Report Posted December 15, 2008 haha, yes, was thinking in the same line, did not try yet though Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted December 15, 2008 Report Posted December 15, 2008 Brendan made a good point. My wipers work when the glass is wet or dry. However, they work much faster when the glass is wet. You could also have the dog lay on the roof of the car with his tail hanging down over the windshield. Then have him wag his tail to clean the windshield. Just tell the inspector that's the way it was done back in the day. Quote
Young Ed Posted December 15, 2008 Report Posted December 15, 2008 Norm as I was reading that last part I was thinking you were suggesting an alternate way to get a wet windshield during inspection Quote
Niel Hoback Posted December 15, 2008 Report Posted December 15, 2008 Rainex seemed to make mine go easier, give it a try, see what happens. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted December 15, 2008 Report Posted December 15, 2008 Norm as I was reading that last part I was thinking you were suggesting an alternate way to get a wet windshield during inspection Ed, I must be in one of my rare moods today. Could not resist making the comment about the dog wagging his tail. Quote
John Mulders Posted January 1, 2009 Author Report Posted January 1, 2009 Decided to work on the P15 wiper issue. Removed the wiper and the mechanism works then. Then removed the spring that pulls the wiper blade against the window from the arm, tested again, it tried to move a bit. Then sprayed some window cleaner on the windshield and voila , the wiper would move back and forth. Should do the trick for the safety check here Thanks for the advice. John Quote
