dirty dan Posted December 4, 2008 Report Posted December 4, 2008 I'm fortunate...My wife bakes the best pecan pie I've ever tasted and we're always blessed with plenty of pecans in south Louisiana. Quote
james curl Posted December 5, 2008 Report Posted December 5, 2008 Tim, I to had a bumper crop last year and not a single pecan this year on any of the 15 trees on the property. I live in central Texas and we are having a drougt also. Quote
Frank Elder Posted December 5, 2008 Report Posted December 5, 2008 When I was growing up in south texas, peeecan pie not pawcan pie, was also called Caro nut pie, after 1 of the main ingredients caro syrup. Yummy! Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted December 5, 2008 Report Posted December 5, 2008 James..we had a great year in the area for the commercial growers..I have a number of trees..if I get nuts..ok, if not..ok..I like the shade and looks of the trees..however my problems mainly is direct result from lack of pllination...it was not until a couple years ago that I learned that the wind is the pollinator..if rain sets in during the blossoming season or no wind, notta..and being a very small sheltered grove of trees I do not get enough winds to pollinate..last year the stars were aligned and we had more nuts that I could pick up.. If I were to have access to a pollinator and do a tad more for fertilizer and spraying..I am sure I could get yealy production..but believe you me..after picking up under all the trees last year..buying 30 lbs from the guy down the street wins out every time.. Merle Coggins Posted December 6, 2008 Report Posted December 6, 2008 When I was growing up in south texas, peeecan pie not pawcan pie, was also called Caro nut pie, after 1 of the main ingredients caro syrup. Yummy! My Mom made a pecan pie for Thanksgiving. When she was baking it she realized that she was out of Caro syrup and didn't want to run to the store just for that. She did have some maple syrup, so decided to use that instead. The pie turned out slightly softer, almost runny but not quite, but tasted AWESOME. Maple Pecan Pie, yummy. Quote
