I replaced the leaky oil pan and on Saturday took the car out for another test drive. It was very disappointing. No power and the longer I drove it the poorer it ran. Finally the car wouldn't even move but instead would backfire and stall. I checked this forum for past suggestions on these symptoms. I checked the timing and it was correct. I checked the points and they were good and properly adjusted. Then I decided to check the accelerator pump. I removed the air filter to look down in the throat of the carb. The choke plate was blocking my view. Wait a minute! I had the choke knob pushed in all the way so the choke should be open. Turns out that I had the outer cable misadjusted where it attaches to the carb. Corrected that and problem was gone. Car runs great. However, Sunday morning on my way into town the engine quit. Acted like it was out of gas. Since I don't know the accuracy of the gas gauge I got a gallon of gas to add to the tank. Still wouldn't run. Disconnected the fuel line to the carb and cranked it over, no fuel. Fuel in the glass pump bowl but not coming out of the line. Fortunately I had a spare pump at home, about two miles away. My wife came and got me and I retrieved the spare pump. Made a roadside transplant and was back on the highway. Had fun driving it around town. Still in shake-down mode I guess but getting there.

Good to hear you solved the problem. 1st test run I made with my 52 p23 I had to walk home about 2 miles it was a clogged filter in the tank. One other thought not sure of the condition of you gas tank but if you have not cleaned it you should check the filter screen on the fuel pump and see if it is clogged with rust or other junk.

You must feel elated after all these years. Congratulations!

Don,

I have to admit it was a very satisfying feeling. 20 years ago I never wouuld have imagined that I would have accomplished what I now have.

Congrats on the test run, even it you had problems, hopefully the more she is driven, the less bugs there will be.

How about some photos?

Good suggestion. The tank was cleaned before installation. I checked the screen and it was clear.

Check the screen in the pump you removed, pull the center screw and then the cover for the bottom chamber. there is also a screen in there.

Did the pivot pin for the cam lever back out??

Glad you got some miles on it, looks great.

Congratulations, Jim. Always great to enjoy the first few drives although sometimes they can be frustrating and trouble plagued. The more you drive it, the more reliabe it will become.....so drive the wheels off it. Trailer queens are renowned for being the most unreliable vehicles out there because they are not driven.

Jim, I am so happy for you, those test drives are nessasary. The two mile walk gives you a chance to think of what's wrong. The fuel pumps we get are rebuilt from outside this country. I had one on the Stude that was leaking oil all over the frame and mixing with the gas going into the carb. I don't know what we are going to do about poor quality.

It must have been a feeling you will never forget driving that fine woodie into town.:D I bet your cheeks are still soar:o shut up DonC.

The real test is when your wife gets in there with you and you all go on that ride, that's when you know you have arrived.

I am very happy for you, I will be at the "Rockville show" saturday the 18 of Oct. If I have my trim I might drive the hawk. See you soon:)

Rodney,

The plan is to take the car to the Gold Cup Steeple Chase races on October 18. It is a big tailgating event and I now have the tailgate for it. Don is right about our woodie group brunch in Fairfax on Sunday, October 19 at 11 AM at Brion's restaurant. It would be great if you could join us.

There is a small town in Gaithersburg called Rockville every year they have a hge show in the towns center at the Rockville mansion. Only one trophy is awarded. all the clubs attend. The POC has a spot I have seen and talked to those folks when I had my 1940 there, the ford clubs have a banner, T-bird club, they arrange all cars according to make that way you see everything together. I will bring a Studebaker this year depending if I get my trim back it could be the 41. This is a great show and you will see many many different cars as these folks haedly ever show their cars.
