I found out today that a co-worker's father is restoring a P15. He is searching for chrome rear fender welt to continue his restoration. I'm sure this has come up before, but where can he find some?

The attaching strip for the welting needs to have plenty of notches to allow bending to follow the curvatures....especially that little compound curve at the front bottom of the fender.

Get an old sheet and cut some strips about 8 to 10 inches wide. Have them sewn onto the tabs and then slit the sheet at the bolts. Then you will have something to grab and pull the welting tightly into the seam. Then cut off the sheet.

I did this on a A model and it worked great - cut my install time in 1/2 and had no bulges or waves

This has come up several times and hopefully someone saved who and where the stainless welts where made but I am not positive who it makes them. The problem with the stainless welting from previous posts has been that it was very hard to work with without crimping it compared to the others. If you've messed with any stainless then you will know how this could be true.

I got my stainless fender welt from www.robertsmotorparts.com

I have not installed it yet so I can't report on that.

It came in an 8' long mailing tube with a 1 x 2 x 8' piece of wood attached to it to prevent damage in shipping. If I remember correctly it wasn't cheap.

I have a couple oh 1948 Chrysler New Yorkers. On one I purchased the chrome metal fender welt from Andy Bernbaum at oldmoparts.com. https://www.oldmoparts.com/parts/a-weatherstripping/stainless-chrome-beaded-fenderwelt/

It is stiff and as others have mentioned almost impossible to bend. I have heard the original chrome was softer and easier to bend. I had poor results with bending on my first car. I ordered the "chrome" fabric welting that everyone sells and returned it. It is cheap looking and totally unacceptable for a restoration. 

I am now restoring my second car, and hope to redo the my first poor welting job.

The problem:

The chrome is not a hollow round tube. The chrome bead is slotted for the bib.

You need to not only bend the welt but twist and bend down at the front lower fender body area which is very difficult without suddenly kinking. 

My plan:

Use a small metal tubing bender, go very, very slowly and try pushing a copper wire down the chrome, heat the chrome to help prevent kinking when bending. If anyone has some tips on bending this I would most thankful.

Verify that your car could have been produced with the chrome strip fender welting.

 

When i went through my 1929-39 Desoto Master Parts book I discovered that the Custom model and not the De Luxe model only were delivered with the chrome fender welting  So look at your parts book to determine if they wee an option or were not installed on your car.  i know it looks great to see the stainless chrome strip.

I've seen a tip for bending fuel or brake like where they put string trimmer plastic line inside it to help with kinking. That might help with your bending. Let me know I've got to do this job to my own 48

I don't even remember who the co-worker was....time flies!
