Hello, Well, To start with I have been having hard start problems, so I had the starter rebuilt, put a new battery in and reset the timing. Still had the problem when hot. I then drove it a while and seemed OK, just had to pump the carb a lot! May have to rebuild the carburator. Well, I drove to a car show last weekend and I started to hear noises more so than before. So I decided I would check the timing again. Well when I reached down to wipe off the timing marks that is when I found the Harmonic balencer was flopping around. That explains the hard starting and noises! So I've got the radiator out. So now I need a large socket and breaker bar and puller to remove the Crank pulley & balencer( tight fit). I may have to raise the front of the motor to get to it properly. I'm going the change the front motor mount, the old mount looks collapsed because I can't remove the fan belt at bottom the engine and crossmember(Belt coming apart too!) Does anyone have suggestions what else I should do? Should I check the Timing chain since I have to remove the front mount cradle anyway to put in the new motor mount! I believe the engine is good, It was rebuilt about 25yrs with very light driving to cars shows and such since. Any comments/advice would be helpfull ! Ernie Baily

Hello, Your car looks pretty nice! Just needs the correct sized Whitewall tires 6:70 x 15 and hubcaps and trim rings. Check with Jim Benjamanson thru the Plymouth Owners Club who sells Goodyear collector tires for original bias tires or Coker for wide wall radials. Also check with Andy Bernbaum or Roberts Mopar Parts for a brake light switch and replacement step boards. I think Neil Riddle has NOS gear shift knobs. Good Luck with the car! Also If you can locate one, put a overdrive in it, will make cruiseing a lot better(use a 51-53 Plymouth, the input shaft will be the right length and will bolt right in, without having to modify the driveshaft). Enjoy! I have had mine for 32 years! Ernie Baily ernestbaily@att.net

Hello, Your car looks like its in pretty good shape! When I rewired my 55Dodge I used a new loom from YnZ wiring it worked out great and took two weekends to intstall with the help of a friend. They include great instructions and along with a original wiring diagram it was fairly easy. There is another company to check out also, Rhode Island wiring. Good Luck and Have Fun!

Hello, The car is looking great! It looks like a little polishing and some good whitewall tire cleaning and you'll be ready for the Car Show season! I've had my 48 Plymouth Special Deluxe 2dr sedan for 32yrs. I put a 53 Plymouth overdrive in it and drive all over on tours. Keep up the great work! Keep sending the pictures. Have Fun! Ernie Baily -
Hello, I'm wondering if the anti-static condensor that mounts on the 6volt generator is the same as a condensor in the distirbutor? If not where do I find one? Thanks, Ernie Baily

Well, I took the door apart and found out that one of the rollers had jumped the track and the window regulator seems to be worn out(woobly), no broken teeth however. Does anyone know a source to have the regulator rebuilt or how to rebuilt it(maybe something I could do?). Also their was no felt in the runners inside the door only the runner up the side and over the top of the door along with the L shape fuzzy at the top of the front runner. Also their are three clips holding the upper channel in, that are riveted and one squeezed in. I have new channel which has no clips. Do I drill out the rivets and reattach the clips to the new one or is their a source to get a new channel with the clips already attached?(specificatly for the 48 Ply 2dr sedan door). Any help or advice would be a great help, Thanks, Ernie

I have installed a 49 Plymouth double action fuel pump with the understanding that it will make the wipers more constant. However it seems not so! How should the hoses hookup? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Ernie ernestbaily@att.net

Hello, I put Goodyear collector tires on my all original 1948 Plymouth Special Deluxe because I found the original dealers delivery sheet under the back seat which told all the options the car came with from the factory which was Goodyear 6:50x15 tires. I have been driving this car with these tires for over 30+ years here in Southern Califorina(I'm on my third set). I got them through Jim Benjamison Plymouth Owners Club. Hello, Just to let you know I've had my 48 Plymouth for 32 years, I'm in Simi Valley CA. and have driven to San Francisco, San Diego and countless Car shows. I have only done one major change besides routine maintance and that was put a 53 Plymouth overdrive trans in. I'm currently running on the 3rd set of Goodyear 6:50x15 bias WW tires. However the car looks great! Best of luck with it. Ernie Baily -

241-270 hemi headers on 53-55 dodge plymouth ?
Ernie Baily replied to dodge59's topic in P15-D24 Forum
Hello, I attemped to use the Sanderson Block Hugger Headers on my 55 Dodge 270 Hemi. They fit ok, But! the collector dumped right over the tie rod on both sides. I took them to a couple of muffler shops thinking that the collector could be cut and angled a bit. But none of the shops wanted to attemp the job. So I just put the stock manifolds back on and eventually sold the headers at a swap meat. It seemed so close to being resloved. -

Hello Everybody, Here is some old pictures of Plymouths my Dad had and the first 46 Plymouth Coupe I helped my Dad with. We put a 331 Hemi in it with the Fluid Drive behind it. Dad would love to pull in to a gas station and ask the attendant to check the oil and watch the look on the attendants face expecting to see a flathead six and find the big 331 with a 4bbl carb in it! Dad used to buy and fix old cars to sell and make extra money for the family. This pic of a $50 Ply was the result of Dad dragging 3 46-48 Plys home, listen to Mom say "What are you doing with these junk cars?" He had a house painter buddy paint the car with house paint left over from a construction site. It was supposed to be white but turned out to be a cream color. He painted the wheels Red and later got some "Spinners" hubcaps and then it beame the second car Dad drove to work. Ernie

Mine had broken at the stop on the tube. I had to drop the pan at a normal oil chage intraval, which allowed me to straighen the pan and put a new gasket to stop some of the leaks. Good luck!

I only put it on during the summer. Its more for conversation than working.

It looks like you have a Great Car to start with. I rebuilt mine about 25yrs ago and put a 53Ply overdrive in and have driven it up and down the coast of California. I still love to drive it! It sure would look good in the dark Blue with wide whites with hubcaps and trim rings. Good luck and Enjoy!

About 2 years ago I used the one on the left as the basis for my Xmas Card. I had a buddy photshop my family and car into the ad and put Santa behind the wheel like he was going use it instead of his sleigh. My whole family really loved it.

OT: Tried her on the freeway for the first time today...
Ernie Baily replied to fedoragent's topic in P15-D24 Forum
Hello Everyone, I've had my 48 Plymouth for over 25 years and had a 53 Ply overdrive trans in it for over 20years, when I purchased it, it came out of a car in a junkyard. All I did was scrape all the old grease and crud off, pressure washed it and painted silver and put it in. The only thing I did was check the gear oil to make sure it was full and it has been working just fine ever since. I learned that you use a Ply overdrive in a Ply car and they shoud be the same length. Dodge, Desoto and Chrysler were longer. My stock driveshaft fit right in with no problem. I'm running the stock rearend that has never been touched since new and cruises about 60-65mph all day long. -
