  1. Guess I should have clarified, I was thinking about pedestrian safety, a couple years ago I stepped out in front of a prius running on electric mode. I walked away from it and all they needed was a new hood and a pair of fresh pants.
  2. Noise is a safety feature!
  3. I original had 16 inch glass packs installed backwards, my exhaust guy poured gas in them and lite them on fire before installing. sounded great but would drone "really bad" but didn't cackle. My father said either park a mile away from home and walk in or don't stay out cruising all night. My exhaust guy installed a 14 inch glass pack in front of a 22 inch glass pack. Still sounds good, doesn't drone, and I was able idle in at night without waking anybody.
  4. Item C is the washer that holds your spare tire to the trunk mount.
  5. I just dropped the engine off at the machine shop so to stay busy I figured I'd rebuild a carb for the car. I have a single carb barrel stromberg off of a 52 Dodge and several carters off of various Plymouths. I have ran the carters for the last 8 years and wondered if the Strombergs were "better"?
  6. Where do you get a seal for 5 bucks? I just bought one for 15 at the parts house, also when I used to work at a model A/T shop we would get 600 weight gear oil to fill the boxes with. I have not been able to find it out here yet, usually get laughed out of the parts houses...... This is where I used to pick it up http://www.vintageford.com/sect_search.cfm?Line=Model%20T&Category=Axle-%20Rear
  7. I just bought the same combo last weekend! If your not planning on using the fluid drive unit you will need a 6 bolt flywheel and a standard bell housing to get it to fit in your '47 with a standard transmission. Hopefully your engine and transmission are in better condition than mine was in.
  8. IA is really unusual about yom plates, when I first moved here I had a set of '40 CA plates on the car that lasted 3 days before I was pulled over and asked if I had made them. Several phone calls and an hr later I was free to go. I recently tried to register the car with '40 IA plates. Turns out that if your car is over 25 yrs old you can run it with any plate you want, as long as you keep the state issued ones in the car. I asked the nice lady at DOT what would happen if I was at fault in an accident and took off, as there would be no way to track me down, her reply, "oh you wouldn't do that!" Had them on the car a year now and have never been pulled over, I do enjoy the free parking!
  9. ok how do you post pictures?
  10. I have pulled apart 2 engines this last week and both of them had several pistons that looked like this one. Does anyone know what is causing this? how can I avoid this from happening to the engine once I get it back from the machine shop and put it together? I had the motor apart about 3 years and 35k miles ago and everything looked fine.
  11. Tried searching it on a desktop, better results. This "smart" phone is pretty good at making me look stupid. Thanks!
  12. I tried searching the forum but maybe I didn't use the right keywords. Has anyone had experience with Elgin Cam Grinders? I have tried calling their number but it must be a California holiday week out there. I assume that they regrind a different duration in your cam and you just adjust the tappets up to make up the difference? I still have a single carb but eventually I'd like to run duals, any suggestions on what duration I should ask for? Or should I just leave it alone?
  13. well it sounds like you all have previous experiences with the vintageamericanparts guy? is it a good resource for parts?
  14. Sounds like a good product, might have to do it to my tank while the engine is at the machine shop. I usually just throw a chain and random bolts in my tanks and shake them like a rattle can. It takes about a dozen fuel filter changes for the next two months till everything cleans up.
  15. I was wondering if anyone knew if a R10 overdrive unit will work with a "powermatic shift" option in a 1941 Plymouth? I realize that they had a taller 2nd gear but is there any thing else that would hinder it from shifting normally?
  16. Beyond its time? probably. But also before the parking brake.......
  17. Are you sure that you have the correct piston in the master cylinder? They made two different lengths and I always seem to get the rebuild kit that has the wrong piston in it.
  18. Hi, I have found a 1939 Chrysler overdrive unit locally and wondered if anyone knew anything about these, I have several mid to late 30's Plymouth owners that want to know if it will fit in their cars. I believe it is a column shift but I have heard that its a 38 top loading trans with an altered top unit so it can be shifted with the column linkage. I have rebuilt several R-10 units but have heard that these are real different. Any ideas what all it will fit and what its worth? Thanks!
