  1. Michael, here's a 6v swamp cooler that looks like a transport for a pet squirrel, if you are just looking for functional. I like the looks of the window unit, but can't imagine they work well to today's standards. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=4996285 Bob, have you ever used one? How well do they work? What is the comfort return on "$225.00 Reserve Not Met?"
  2. I don't know much about them, but I believe they work on the priciple of evaporation, rather than using any kind of coolant. Here is a picture of one: http://www.flickr.com/photos/joeross/2253402695/ The label looks like it says "Sea-Breez" - can't make out the rest. Haven't been able to find much else about them. Perhaps someone has some design plans. But then, getting one of those little fans with the squirt bottle at the MegaLoMart might be the most economical way to accomplish the same thing. And IT would work at the drive-in, too.
  3. The 1962 Imperial Custom blew me away! What an amazing ride. And the '69 Mod Top Baracuda. Felt like I was watching Laugh-In. There's a beautiful red Panel Van on the site that I wish they had featured on the show.
  4. Dave, Kyle, and Cpt. Fred, As far as I can tell my '46 has the original interior (except paint and the table cloth seat bottom) and my arm rests match the door panel material. Have to say I prefer the maroon look, and I'd guess that it would hold up better (dirt from hands, hardier material) under normal use than the door panel cloth.
  5. I don't know if it's a good commercial or not. I've watched it four times now, and I've looked at everything BUT the Audi - which, I think, was supposed to be the subject of the commercial.
  6. So was that you that bought the two 49's on eBay? Sure would be convenient timing http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1949-49-Plymouth-Sedans-two-price-one-/300429103863?cmd=ViewItem&pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item45f2f852f7
  7. I second this. We get too caught up in what oil companies (or rather, their marketing reps) sell us. I once owned an Eagle Summit whose Blue Book value had dipped below the cost of an oil change. I ran another 30,000 miles only adding oil when needed... never even changed the filter. I couldn't kill that engine. I don't say this to encourage anyone to treat these engines that way (I really liked that little Mitsubishi engine), but to point out that (almost all) oil today is so much better than what our engines have been running 50, 60, 70+ years on. The machining and lubricating technology today is going to greatly reduce the amount of garbage in your newly rebuilt engine (mine went through the same thing 67 years ago), so you likely have little to worry about. I want my internals to stay clean but the fact is the P.O. ran it without an air cleaner because he "liked the sound." Condensation is bad, but then, there weren't even many heated stables around half a century ago, let alone heated garages. Engines are much tougher than we give them credit for being... just ask my second child.
  8. Thanks, Greg. I hate doing things twice... and wouldn't want anyone else having to do so behind me.
  9. My '46 p15 had been converted to 12-volt by the PO and I am going through replacing some wiring and grounding things properly. I feel that I might want to revert the car back to 6-volt one day - or at least would like to leave that option open. Is there a problem with running wire sufficient for 6-volts on a 12-volt system? What gauge should I use? And I'm speaking of lights, sending unit, etc. 10-gauge?
  10. Speaking for the under-40 sect, I will keep Don in mind on Monday with a salute to him and all the others like him who sacrificed a part of their lives, freedom, and innocence so the rest of us could enjoy ours so fully (and it had better be fully... in payment to them). I was blessed with a grandfather who not only flew B-24's in the war but loved nothing more than to talk about his experience. Thanks to listening and his memoires I have many rich memories of and lessons from an effort that took place three decades before I was born. A solute to all Veterans, and especially those who we are loosing at a faster and faster rate. I encourage everyone to sit down and listen before those memories are gone.
  11. Not at all. I was referring only to your history with the local law enforcement http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/showthread.php?t=21603&highlight=beer+question Had to read that one to my wife... she thought it was great! One of those stories one just doesn't find as entertaining at the time.
  12. That's great, Bob, and what a cool trophy! Got my wife sold on those twin spots at a show this weekend. Hadn't noticed your compass before. What kind is it?
  13. HA! Love the photo. Much more effective than ours. We really could've used you on Saturday. Maybe next time. I pay in beer, but we promise: no shows in northern Indiana.
  14. We entered our fist car show on Saturday and took FIRST PLACE... in our category. Okay, so our car was the only entry in the "In Progress" category, a good time was had by all, made some new friends, and the high school band raised several hundred dollars. Thought I'd post a photo of our display. The whole family worked on the sign and other items and the theme seemed popular with the show goers.
  15. So great to hear the rare happy ending when it comes to crazy mothers and custody cases! Congratulations to you AND your children! Please post again on June 2nd describing how the 1st felt - include every sweet detail for those still fighting the good fight
  16. Fresh out, Don. But I found one for you: http://www.courtesyaircraft.com/Current%20Inventory/N47DA%20Republic%20P-47D%20Specs.htm And they're asking just a tad more than a GTX.
  17. My behavior is like that of a 16-year old boy: any excuse to get behind the wheel. I drove up the driveway to check the mail the other day! Can't drive to work, though - no spare tire yet, and the 35 mile drive would be a little risky with no back-up. Soon, though. I love seeing and hearing about these old beauts being driven. Trailer queens are beautiful to look at, and hats off to the guys who so meticulously restore these fine machines to their historical glory, but my heart and butt are in the driver's seat. Keep 'em rolling!
  18. In some economies, not even polished "Turds" will sell. Have to admit, I'd buy this one if I had the change lying around: http://www.autoblog.com/2010/01/23/1964-shelby-cobra-flip-top-fails-to-meet-reserve-at-rm-auction/
  19. eBay informed me I may be interested in this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Plymouth-Barracuda_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZalgoQ3dSIQ26itsQ3dIQ26ituQ3dUCIQ252BUAQ252BFICSQ26otnQ3d5Q26pmodQ3d150444830018Q26psQ3d63QQ_trksidZp4340Q2ee17000Q2em263QQcategoryZ6409QQitemZ130389561494 They obviously haven't paid attention to my spending habits. Now, I want Plymouth values as high as the next owner - and my car is surely very special to me - but does this seem a tad excessive? I did a search on eBay, highest to lowest, and was even more surprised to see this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1971-Plymouth-GTX-Matching-440-6-PACK-4-Speed-Nice-/110526791297?cmd=ViewItem&pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item19bbe8fe81 That's almost half a million more than a Packard owned by Al Capone's family, Marty Robbins, AND Roy Acuff. FOR SALE: 1946 Plymouth Special DeLuxe 4-door 12v conversion, new radials, no heater, three leaks, broken window 1 of a Bunch manufactured by Plymouth Owned by Edward Roberts Buy it Now: $946,000.00
  20. Wow! What a beautiful color combination. Killeen, TX. My son spent his first days in this world at Scott & White in the Neonatal ICU (all is fine now). Great people there, as well as the folks at the Ronald McDonald House. Makes me pine for central Texas again.
  21. Now THAT'S racing!!! Hood up and still going! At the 9:09 mark the guys in the tower don't even flinch. Did they not have enough time or was it just that fatalistic an activity? You few-door owners need to get together and put one of these on for the rest of us. I'd do it but my 4-door's just too big
  22. Haven't seen that one. The wife and I were watching Shadow of the Thin Man the other day and enjoyed the cars on the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge seen as much as the rest of the movie. My new favorite website: http://imcdb.org/movie.php?id=34172 "He's getting more like his father everyday." "He sure is. This morning he was playing with a corkscrew."
  23. Thanks for the advice on that. A definite for the next time I am digging around up there. In fact, I have a Runtz unti on the way so this week might be a good time. That's one of the great things about this forum: while the technical advice is great, it's the stuff you really can't just study or research on your own. My grandfather "Pop" loved his workshop, and more than likely enjoyed building tools to perform jobs more than actually performing the job. He was a master at figuring out how to accomplish a mechanical task in the most efficient way, and he taught me everything I was mature enough to listen to. I've worked with other mechanics and worked in a garage while in college and figure myself to be pretty handy in my own shop. But in the short time I've been cruising this forum I've already come across three or four pieces of advice about how to do a job that come from nothing but experience, from hood spring installation to making room around pedals. Pop is gone now, but this forum is like having a hundred Pops in my garage all the time (no reference meant to age, there). Thanks again, to everyone involved.
  24. Thanks all for the advice. The Sharpies worked great! Beautiful... out of the car. Speedo still doesn't work in the dash, though. I'll start troubleshooting next. I was forced to purchase a set of 12 Shapies in order to get a yellow one, so I have 9 Sharpie Permanent Markers for sale at a reasonable price.
  25. This is awesome! I am petitioning my wife now for underhood nose art. I'm thinking Elvira!
